Why is Montreal called the Habs?

Always loved hockey and playoff hockey is the best! But for the life of me I have no clue why they have the nickname Habs! GFY hockey fans help me out :thumbsup

Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," a name given to the original french descendants in the late 1700s. Since conception the "Habs" have been marketed as a 'french canadian' hockey team, and the nickname stuck.

But thanks for this thread, it caused me to google it for you thus I clicked on a few links and discovered something I don't think I was aware of about the habs before now...

Founded in 1909, the Canadiens are the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team and the only existing NHL club to predate the founding of the NHL,
:D

Wayy back in the day Jean Beliveau, the Mahovlich brothers, Henri Richard, JC Tremblay, Serge Savarde, Guy Lapointe and Yvan Cournoyer (corn-why-ay) were among my favorites. Fav goalie was Rogie Vachon, at least until Ken Dryden came along.
