Why did it take so Fucking Long for...

3D to be such a big deal. 3D has been out forever. Why now? So many movies, new cameras coming out, TVs. What's with the big Hype?

IMAX stocks have almost doubled this year alone because of AVATAR and upcoming 3D flicks.

Barefootsies 05-02-2010 04:16 PM

3D has come and gone a number of times over the years.

My guess is this fade will last for a bit, and then disappear again as well.

Time will tell.

Vendzilla 05-02-2010 04:16 PM

I think it's because they figured out how to make 3D TV's

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 05-02-2010 04:18 PM

I think it's because the 3d of yore sucked fucking nuts .

They're getting to a point where the new technology is actually passable for mass consumption on a broad scale... :2 cents:

Which is still 3X what a regular TV is.

fatfoo 05-02-2010 04:22 PM

IMAX stocks have doubled you say. Wow, unbelievable. It would be interesting to see a movie that transfers the sense of smell, taste and touch as well as sound and sight.

TrainWreckContent 05-02-2010 04:53 PM

i am actually amazed that more movies arent 3d like the new iron man that would have been awesome to see if it were in 3d....the new technology i think 3d here is to stay esp with 3d tvs coming out

Cyber Fucker 05-02-2010 05:19 PM

It's because technology lets now to take the real advantage of 3D. All tv sets producers were preparing their 3D displays since very long time (I remember that I read about first presented prototypes already in early 2000s), but it exploded just right now, many years later. And now if anyone don't want to stay behind and to loose his share or part of the marked have to jump into this. 3D is undoubtedly the cure for the recession on the electronic market. And 3D stereoscopic porn is now just a matter of time. I mean all adult programs will sooner or later do it. I think that 3D porn will not kill traditional porn instantly but will progressively increasing its percentage.

The ones of you that maintain 3D is bullshit either don't read the news or are too lazy to do something in this direction or just hate the thought it may cut down on their regular 2d porn traffic.

Zorgman 05-02-2010 05:26 PM

I seriously don't see 3D becoming a big thing for home cinema. Sure a few movies are starting to use it for action flicks, but really... most movies wouldn't film in 3D. Lets take a comedy or love story movie for example - 3D is simply not needed, so therefor only action movies will ever use 3D. Hence not enough to keep it active.

You do realize those movies cost $20 a ticket.

Those TVs are too expensive. Also you need glasses to watch TV and not those cheap ones. Each pair is $150. Also glasses will only work with that brand of TV. Samsung won't work with Sony or Panasonmic or LG etc etc.

IllTestYourGirls 05-02-2010 05:29 PM

Just a fad that goes in circles.

Cyber Fucker 05-02-2010 05:29 PM

I can't wait to see the next posts in this thread full of hate like in the 3d thread from last week suggesting that ones that say 3d is here are bullshing and just have something 3d to sell... :P

TrainWreckContent 05-02-2010 05:34 PM

yeah but people are paying that avatar was the highest grossing film

yeah but give it a little more time and the prices will go down....I am kind of shocked the TV's dont come with at least one pair of glasses....

Cyber Fucker 05-02-2010 05:47 PM

3D tv sets without need of glasses are already invented (just not on market YET).

Do some search through news services or google...

Time to wake up people :)

VikingMan 05-02-2010 05:56 PM

It is a way to fill theater seats because so many people are downloading movies, they need to go to the theater to get the 3D.

Actually Avatar was cheaper. They've recently raised the prices by $5.

Some do some don't. The fact is if you have family of 4 that's 4 pairs. What if you have friends come over? Super Bowl party? Are you going to shell out for 20 pair? Also having to wear glasses to watch TV is stupid.

The new 3D at the theaters kicks ass, its way better than before.

mgtarheels 05-02-2010 06:27 PM

$20 for 3D movies? They're $10 here compared to $8 for a regular movie.

And for those who don't think 3D will catch on...well, LOL.

They need something to attract those of us that no longer go to the movie theatre, but rather wait the 3 months and buy it on Bluray and DVD. They want your money both times and with 3D like in Avatar, they'll get my butt into the theatre for sure.

Can't wait for the next movie shot with Cameron's technology, the next Resident Evil flick.

I sold my shares about a month ago when it hit $13.00 a share, I did pretty good. Then it went up, I bought more, sold, then it went up and I sold and after $17.00 I didn't touch it and last week it hit over $21.00.

It's a Hot Stock because of this 3D Fad.

ShellyCrash 05-02-2010 08:59 PM

I still have my doubts that 3D TV will be widely adopted, but for movies I can totally buy into it.

The real reason the movie industry made this huge jump into 3D and put the funding to advance the technology wasn't because of the 3D TV factor (which may wind up playing against them if it does take off), but because a 3D movie theatre experience with new technology is something that cannot currently be pirated / duplicated outside the theatre. Its a way to try and ensure more people actually buy the tickets to see this summers biggest movies vs download the torrents via the web.

As far as Imax stock soaring, have any of you gotten to see REAL Imax 3D yet? It's fucking breathtaking. Avatar- while shown in Imax 3D- was not shot using Imax 3D. When you compare the two the 3D effect of Avatar, while impressive, side by side with true Imax 3D is like watching a regular program on an HD channel vs watching something shot in HD on an HD channel.

I'm not a big fan of 3d movies. Avatar was the only one I've seen in 3d for the past few years

Sarah_Jayne 05-03-2010 04:31 AM

Piracy became a big issue so they needed something to bring people into the actual cinemas.

SuzzyQ 05-03-2010 05:56 AM

Transmitting 3D has yet to be figured out. Until they figure out how to get all that info into a 36meg carrier - compressed, it wont be happening anytime soon. ESPN is planning to launch a 3D net this year on dish net though.

You have a valid point here.
