Keep in mind, they couldnt put the rig any closer to our shore (its 50 miles out) becuse our entire coast is protected region (national widlife refuge waters)

according to what i read the owner of the oil rig saved $500K on a security valve that is mandatory everywhere in the world but in the U.S.

and it gets really ironic when you read their statements about environment safety: http://www.deepwater.com/fw/main/Environment-81.html

It should also be noted that Shell and other companies install it regularly in the US even though its not mandatory, BP however, does not install them because its 500k and its "too expensive.

Quote:

Early investigations have revealed that BP did not bother to install -- and that U.S. regulations do not require -- a backup device to provide another layer of protection in case the "fail-safe" shutoff valve failed (which is exactly what happened). Brazil requires such a device, and oil companies like Shell install it routinely even in the U.S. BP didn't because, at $500,000, it was "too expensive."

Oh that Rush Limbaugh certainly is a humorous little devil isn't he?

You'd think after being on the air for that many years you couldn't get any funnier.

that's $500k per offshore platform, BP probably has 100s of them, if not 1000s

1000s x $500k adds up... :2 cents:

Yea, the problem isn't drilling it's not having effective primary and secondary emergency contingency plans for the inevitable screw up.

Great news! I'm assuming that means they are funding the whole cleanup then, and there won't be any tax money wasted on this?
