Any dodge viper owners here???

Debating on a First Gen (best looking vipers imo) and was wondering if anyone else on here had any good (or bad) word to share

oh and of course, feel free to share your personal pics :thumbsup

BIGTYMER 05-03-2010 09:31 PM

The early models were built like shit IMO.

Adam X 05-03-2010 09:36 PM

had a red 98 gts I bought new that year.. powerful is an understatement.. watch out for the back sliding out if you gas it too hard.. great ride.. not too many on the road, but get a 2nd car or keep what you have if you get one.. you wont want to drive it everyday.. well, you might want to but...

Jakez 05-03-2010 09:41 PM

Sorry never owned a Viper, but the old Viper GTS is the sexiest car on this planet hands down. Voluptuous!

Did you know the body was made from old canoo's (lol jk, that's what Top Gear said, but it does look like it)?

damn that is a nice car!!

BSleazy 05-03-2010 10:43 PM

I want that car.

Loch 05-03-2010 11:39 PM

Talk to Minte, he most likely owned a few or all of them

tiger 05-04-2010 12:21 AM

I always wanted one of those.

leg4 05-04-2010 12:42 AM

I never had one of these, but I did have a Mercury Mistress.

John-ACWM 05-04-2010 01:00 AM

Never owned one but I remember the impact it made on the market when it first appeared. Damn beautiful car!

Jon Oso 05-04-2010 05:52 AM

I am not sure of the exact years but I think the 99-01's came with forged internals. I know a few people that have had them but they're bad ass cars.

spazlabz 05-04-2010 06:00 AM

I used to have one, ran it across my desk going 'VROOOOOOOOOOOM!' and giggling, I think the dog chewed the tires off

bronco67 05-04-2010 06:43 AM

I've only actually seen one in my entire life.

djswivle 05-04-2010 07:09 AM

Indeed the Gts first gen are one of thee sexiest cars still to this day, almost 20 years later, crazy....

My problem is whether I should get the convertible or the gts model, such a tough call.

Thanks for all the info. :)

LadyMischief 05-04-2010 07:14 AM

Let me just say this first off, I am a mopar girl and love mopar power, we have a Dodge Challenger SRT8 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8...however, I would never own a viper. the ride is crap, the interior is spartan to say the least, handling is total shit on them, they are pretty much only good in a straight line, and even then, you are lucky if you can keep it going straight. I would much rather see the SRT10 engine in the Challenger, or in the new upcoming Cuda edition. Most likely, you'd be just as happy with something with the new 6.4L Hemi that's coming in new mopars.

Just my 2cents.

RadicalSights 05-04-2010 07:19 AM

those cars are for white trash.. no offence to all the white trash

GTS Mark 05-04-2010 07:39 AM

I was in one on the track a while back, handled like shit but had brute power.

djswivle 05-04-2010 07:50 AM

Understand the "ride of the vehicle" may be crap and only good for a straight line, although I doubt your "Dodge Challenger SRT8 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8" could keep up on any curve or straight line lol and please tell me a muscle car of those years that had a "good ride"

Good thing the one I am interested in, the suspension has already been dealt with, with aftermarket suspension..

A car like itself doesnt need fancy interior, especially when your speeding pass an old lady, in her new glamourized Dodge Challenger srt8 :1orglaugh:1orglaugh (joke)

justinsain 05-04-2010 09:18 AM

We had a great turnout of Vipers at our last " Cars & Cafe " and of course I got a few pics of them.

You guys can decide which one is the best :winkwink:

Here's just a few including one with a $20,000 paint job. :upsidedow

The clownshoe gen was such a unique and badass looking car...

Personally I always loved how the Viper has stuck true to it's "no pussies allowed" policy, with no power steering, breaking, or stability features :thumbsup

Kenny B! 05-04-2010 09:26 AM

The viper has one of the the hottest exteriors and crappy interiors

Eh.

I will say that the Zagato roof is an exceptionally cool touch.

Rochard 05-04-2010 10:53 AM

Vipers suck. Getting in or out of them your going to burn your leg on the exhaust - which runs under the door.

Remember the vipers Ron (FM) used to own and race?? Pretty sweet...

Had an opportunity to drive one, my hip to knee lenght is too long. My left knee was shoved into the dash, making it impossible to work the clutch.

If you are more than 6' tall this might be an issue for ya

Spunky 05-04-2010 06:20 PM

Some pretty damn sweet looking cars, kinda impractical but the chicks dig em

Stay away from the first gen Vipers my friend, trust me I know from experience, they were a real POS. I owned 2 of them and they were problematic to say the least. I know they made improvements with the later generations. But those first gens was a waste of money :(

Brian Street Team 05-04-2010 10:48 PM

Vipers are alright but I don't know if I could spend all that money on something made to go pretty much in a straight line

nudecanada 05-05-2010 01:33 AM

We don't own a Viper (I wish!) but we do have a 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 that we are using as a daily driver now and it had been beyond reliable. And strong as hell.

It is reliable, loads of power, but hella bad on gas. Either way, it is a lot of fun to drive and never any problems with it. :upsidedow

SGS 05-05-2010 01:41 AM

Didn't Lensman buy one a few years back?

edgeprod 06-05-2010 10:43 AM

I own a newer one. I'd highly suggest spending the $110k on a new one over getting a used one. They're built like absolute crap, but they've been GOLDEN about honoring the warranty.

Here's pics of my personal Viper:

http://edgeprod.com/dom/toys/viper1-sized.jpg

http://edgeprod.com/dom/toys/viper-front.jpg

http://edgeprod.com/dom/toys/viper-side.jpg

First pic is in the driveway at my old house, before I had it washed for the first time. Second and third pic is after a bath and before any mods.

I'd sell you mine, if you're interested -- I want to get a black one instead.

PenisFace 06-05-2010 12:49 PM

edit: ^^^ This guy bought it for his wife. That's the only explanation.

Don't go near first gen vipers. They have bondo'd hoods from the factory :1orglaugh:1orglaugh Also, if you need parts, they are astronomically expensive. They also have inconsistent gaps between panels and are just generally the shitty 1980's daewoo of the viper.

The new vipers aren't really vipers. At least not in spirit. As the first few gens looked like a viper. The new ones don't conjure images of a snake at all. They just look like a sleek (albeit really heavy) sports car.

Don't expect much soundwise from their v10's. A v10 can sound absolutely incredible, just not the truck engines that powered the vipers. Basically, they sound terrible and don't make you think of a sports car when you hear one. They do make lots of torque, though. They will also rape your wallet if you enjoy them the way they were built to be enjoyed, because they will eat rear tires all day long. And their rear tires are HUGE.

Ignore the new ones, try to find one from like 1999 or 2000. New ones are for people who don't understand what the viper was all about. They got rid of the rawness of the sports car experience and replaced it with something your wife can drive. Interestingly enough, I've only ever seen women driving the new ones.

I think you might be confused. Vipers handle pretty nicely. Over 1g on skidpad.

baddog 06-05-2010 01:32 PM

I remember when they first came out. A friend of mine had a gig driving cars to their new owners. He lived in a not so good part of town, and you entered his house from an alley.

I will never forget pulling into that alley and seeing two of them sitting outside his garage. Each car was worth as much as any two of the duplexes around there.
