To any americans who feel petrol is too expensive...

...I just filled up my SUV yesterday for $113.87 (70something liters). I'm gonna be trading it in for a diesel real soon I think.

fatfoo 05-06-2010 08:54 AM

It's amazing how gas prices rise so much. I remember back in 1997, the gas price was something like $0.40 for liter in Canada.

Barefootsies 05-06-2010 08:55 AM

Madness foo.

Most in the U.S. gripe when it's $50.00 for a tank of gas.

Yeah, my Z costs about $40 to fill up right now (with 93 octane premium), and my Rav4 is about the same. Even that feels like a lot compared to 5 years ago.

IllTestYourGirls 05-06-2010 09:09 AM

How much of that are taxes?

FreeHugeMovies 05-06-2010 09:10 AM

About 60 bucks to fill up. That lasts about a week.

96ukssob 05-06-2010 09:13 AM

cost me around $80 to fill up my car :(

seeandsee 05-06-2010 09:15 AM

come to shitty europe, will get strike

fuzebox 05-06-2010 09:25 AM

Most americans have never experienced expensive gas.

Zuzana Designs 05-06-2010 09:29 AM

Cost me around $40 a week in gas.

Platinumpimp 05-06-2010 09:34 AM

Thats nothing Konr4d

Last week I filled up my tank. 71 liters x1,579 euro. Ran me around 112 euro. It's crazy.

FilthyRob 05-06-2010 09:35 AM

I spend around 55 - 60 dollars a tank in So Cal.

Poindexterity 05-06-2010 09:39 AM

im considering the expense of petrol to be FAR higher than anything monetary.

it is raping my country as we speak.

I have a Chevy 4X4 pickup 2500HD turbo diesel that gets low 20's mpg even when pulling a loaded trailer. Diesel is the way to go. Holding more than 60 gallons of fuel I can go over 1200 miles between stops. (but my bladder can't)

Don't taxes make up the price difference? Is the actual cost of the product that much more?

Prices will have to go much higher for American's to be willing to truly put effort into funding alternative means such as trains, hydrogen and electric.

A lot of American's say they believe in alternative fuel but few are willing to spend the money for the conversion to these alternatives.

Until our energy prices go super high nothing will happen.

spazlabz 05-06-2010 10:06 AM

I have never been to Europe (which I hope to change relatively soon) but my impression is that Europeans enjoy great public transportation and destinations that are relative close like groceries within walking distance and such. Americans, the vast majority of Americans have to travel much longer distances and no access to public transport. It is different in big cities but for those of us not in metropolitan areas a car is our only means to get to the places we need to go.....We spend a lot of money on fuel, just considerably less per gallon

CarlosTheGaucho 05-06-2010 10:27 AM

I'm around $122 - $ 128 to fill up as I just tried to calculate

Yes, I walk to any place that takes up to 20 minutes by walk

:)

Some of the extra would be taxes yes but not a lot.
Every country has different set oil prices, i forget the name of the association calculating and taking care of that.
But governed on a global scale....

BlackCrayon 05-06-2010 11:30 AM

yeah but you live in a communist country.

Gas was 1.17 a liter here. 1.30 for the 93 oc. Cost me 50$ to fill the car and 75$ to fill the suv nowadays. I was in a rush the other day I put in 50$ and I had just under 3/4 of a tank. Now that's depressing..lol

But what can you do. Beats walking..lol

The problem with public transportation over here is that it's usually totally full, including:

- golden kids with mega super huge smartphones and 140 decibel ringtones
- soft drugs abusers
- radioactive pensioners
- all kinds of psycho cases
- ghetto mentality gypsies

So I actually prefer to walk to any place that's within the 20 min reach

It'd cost the same as $133.15 to do that in the UK ;( :(

Europe does have areas that don't provide such great public transport. If you live out of the city you are reliant on your car also. Not everyone lives next to a bus stop or train station that actually goes anywhere useful.

I've been to numerous places in the UK and France that require a car for just getting the milk in (10 mile drive to get milk).

It's 1.55 euro a liter here at the moment, works out to $7.53 per gallon.

rowan 05-07-2010 08:57 AM

I'm paying about $AUD1.30 per litre which is about $USD1.18/L or $USD4.47 per gallon

Does petrol pricing follow a weekly cycle in other parts of the world? Around here it's usually cheapest on Thursday. There have been numerous anticompetitive investigations into price fixing but no one in the govt seems to be able to figure out that petrol prices changing around the RETAIL market (not the supply prices) are highly suspicious...

Raf1 05-07-2010 09:11 AM

I agree. Americans have no idea what expensive means when it comes to gas :)

cherrylula 05-07-2010 09:40 AM

what do people in Europe pay for car insurance?

Over here (Central Europe, Czech Republic) it's roughly about:

engine:

1.6 - 1.8 - cca $ 350 a year

over 1.8 - cca $ 450 a year

over 2.5 - cca $ 550 a year

This is the basic mandatory insurance that you are forced to pay with any registered vehicle, not including any assistance services or accident insurance, that can add as much as another 50 - 150 pct. on top of that depending on the plan.

TheDA 05-07-2010 10:13 AM

I filled up 2 days ago

74.58 litres - £89.42 - $132.05 - €103.91 :disgust :)

And that's not even the most expensive price in the area.

space...that is it in a nutshell. I live in a very small town..... the population is under 6K but is spread out over a pretty large area. Lots of it is rural and the area could not support public transportation. We have vans that will help out the elderly and infirmed to get around but that is it. Americans also seem to be pretty strong opposed to paying taxes for improved infrastructure which would include public transportation

I used to talk to this guy in Germany several years ago. He used to delight in giving me a hard time about how Americans were 'obsessed' with their autos. It was difficult trying to explain to him that not only do you practically have to have a car here, but it better be reliable.... he told me he thought it was foolish and very American.

Then he visited here for his sister's wedding and could not believe how vast the distances were here with absolutely no civilization for miles in any direction. :1orglaugh he stopped giving me a hard time and said he understood now
