Dominican Republic
I'm looking at some vacation locations in the DR but I've never been so I'm really not sure what parts are good, better, best, or downright bad.
I'm currently considering Puerto Plata. Anybody have experience with the DR and have any recommendations and or warnings? Thanks in advance. |
Planning a quickie wedding or divorce?
:winkwink: |
i was there once, but it was around 14 years ago, barely remember it. we stayed at a decent place, i can try to look it up if you want, it might not even exist now
|
Puerto Plata is fine. All I can recommend is to lose fat.
You could be on any resort in the world, but you will not enjoy your time if people are laughing at you because you are fat. (I don't know whether you are fat or not). Good luck. |
Punta Cana has better beaches and is a little more upscale that Puerto Plata.
Puerto Plata is kind of a rough town too, I lived there a bit. There is also Santo Domingo but it's really a congested city and the beaches there are not that great. I heard that La Romana has some awesome beaches too. |

I was there 2 years ago for 2 weeks. We didn't have any real complaints with Puerto Plata at all. The beaches were good, and were never busy. I would certainly go back again. Ross was there too. I think his only complaint was the size of the spider in his apartment. Fucking huuuuuuge ! :winkwink: |

i was in santa domingo and punta cana last year.
santo domingo has some nice boutique hotels (let me know if you need recommendations on hotel) and is a historic city, but it is third world.. punta cana is unbelievable nice tropic, white beaches, water temp was atleast 80 deg f. you can take boat rides from s domingo to p cana, takes a few hour on a nice boat but is well worth it. advice: learn a few words in spanish, they speak no english... |
Some tips-
If you're going to travel off the beaten path in DR, it's best if you know more than a survival amount of Spanish. If you're going to clubs or strip joints take someone that knows the turf. Be wary of eating anything from vending stalls, and NEVER drink anything from those stalls that don't come in bottles. |
Been living in the DR for the last 11 years. Puerto Plata and surrounding area has gone way downhill in terms of crime lately.
It is cheaper than Punta Cana but you get what you pay for. If you stay in the resort you will be safe, no question, but its true the beaches in La Romana are better. |

Can you recommend any all inclusive vacation villas in either Punta Cana or La Romana? I'm looking for large places. 8 guests. This is what I have been considering http://hacienda-resorts.com/index.ph...task=view&id=4 |

Unless you want a free-for-all with hookers, hit Punta Cana. If you do end up in Puerto Plata, leave and head for Cabarete. It's a nice spot not far from PP. World class wind and kite surfing there. |

I am not going to link to it here cause I'm not sure if that's against the rules but if you google "dominican republic message board" it will be the first result. |

I just saw this, but pompusjohn has you covered Aaron. I'm going in about 10 days and maybe there for about 2 weeks, but Punt cana and la romana are the best touristy places for fun. Me I'm a "cibaeņo" love Santiago I spend most of my time there.
|
nice place...
|
Aaron, just for the heck of it, who is POSSIBLY getting married?

I'll give you a hint. http://www.gfy.com/fucking-around-and-business-discussion/870893-pleasure-congratulate-aaronm-pic.html |
Puerto Plata is ok but there are many other choices....You could try Sosua or even Cabarete because they have a nice beach there and it's right up the road from Sosua where there are plenty hoes....I've heard Punta Cana is gorgeous....I've also been to Boca Chica....That's decent too if you don't want to spend a lot of money...
But since you're a big balling content shooter, I would try Punta Cana. |
If you go to Puerto Plata, stay away from the Riu resorts. My wife and I went there for a week with some friends and it's definitely not a five star like they bill it. Food was hit and miss, front desk staff was rude and they had sewage exhausts throughout the resort so you'd be walking back to your room after drinking all day and get a huge whiff of five day old shit. Not nice.

Yeah, that's what I needed to know for a family vacation to celebrate an anniversary and have a wedding. Thanks for that wonderful insight. |
I went and stayed here http://www.villasimplyparadise.com/
Which is in between the big cities on the northern coast. It was awesome. The place and people there were great :thumbsup |
Hey Aaron, I've been down there a few times. Puerto Plata is north and Punta Cana is south-east. I prefer the latter. Punta Cana has nicer beaches and less wind.
Enjoy your trip. |

Either way, I have washed my hands of this. |

Never said I was shocked. How the hell could I be considering the source? Although I thought you had a little common sense and thought you might actually read threads before replying to them. My bad. |

Either way we are looking at doing this in early January. Would be nice if I knew the dates of the AVN show. :) |
Puerto Plata is low budget. Punta Cana has wayyyy nicer beaches and resorts. I got married at the Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana in March 09, was a fucking blast. La Romana is pretty nice as well, if you go there then stick to the Hacienda Dominicus by Iberostar resorts, its the nicest resort in that area.
If you want to go more upscale in Punta Cana, check out the Paradisus Palma Real or the Moon Palace. You'll pay more but the food will be better, more choices for booze and wine, etc. |

Great info, thank you. My main thing is I'm looking for large villas and unfortunately not all of the resorts have them. |
I stayed at Sun Village Resort and Spa, Cofresi, Puerto Plata.. AMAZING! I loved it, and would go back in a heart beat. All inclusive plus they also do luxury villas :) xx
|
I went to Puerta Plata in 2008, loved it. I was in a resort tho with lots of hotels, private beach etc so felt very very safe. Heading outside I only went on organised tours/trips.
The people that I dealt with were very nice and friendly, only annoying things are the looky looky guys who try and sell you stuff on the beach, but you get them everywhere. |
If you have a chance hit PLaya Grande beach and have some giant langoustines cooked for you on the spot...

La Roma FTW, you'll love it!
