Google's Android outsells iPhone, threatens BlackBerry

SAN FRANCISCO: Google Inc displaced iPhone maker Apple Inc to become the second most popular provider of smartphone software in the United States during the first quarter, the latest sign of the increasing competition in the fast-growing mobile market.

Smartphones featuring Google's Android operating system accounted for 28 percent of US smartphone unit sales in the first quarter according to NPD Group, behind top-ranked Research in Motion, maker of the Blackberry phone, which had a 36 percent share of the market.

Smartphones, which allow consumers to surf the web, send email and run specialized applications on wide, color screens, are increasingly replacing no-frills cell phones for many U.S. consumers.

The devices have become a prime battleground for a variety of tech companies seeking to ensure a good position in the evolving market.

Brilliant work. Did you read the article or the headline? Did you then look at the research?

It's SELF-REPORTED figures.

And even then it is hardly a significant number.

But yes, count that as iphone failing if it helps you justify your purchasing decision.

Can't speak for everyone but I only hate on apple fanboys that hate on everything non-apple. Apple makes good stuff, but to say everything else is crap or "behind" or whatever is ridiculous. Threads like this or ones about Apple not having Flash get Apple fanboys incensed for whatever reason...almost like calling a homophobe gay.

I just got the Google phone and I am impressed! I love my iPhone but the Nexus one is very cool.

fatfoo 05-13-2010 09:17 PM

it's because the android is on so many different devices

kristin 05-14-2010 08:45 AM

Most people who wanted an iPhone already have one. The current buyers of course are more likely to buy the Android - they either are anti-apple, don't want to go to AT&T, etc and they could just want the Droid, not disputing that.

But comparing the Droid sales to the current sales of a phone released years ago is apples to oranges. It would need to compare current Droid sales against the sales of the iPhone when it was at the same spot in the product life cycle.

Added to which, as I said yesterday, the source is sketchy. Self-declared sales figures...

Where does it say self-declared? It seems the numbers are from the NPD Group which is far from "sketchy". Where did you hear these numbers are self-declared?
