Its NoScript telling your unblockable popup to go eat a dick.

BestXXXPorn 05-17-2010 09:05 AM

Interesting it forced a download with no prompt but no auto launching of the App (Chrome on Windows 7)...

Actually this seems like a security risk... downloading a file with no user action other than visiting a page.

its also telling almost every website to go eat a dick, basically you took the wheels off your car to show me how good the brakes are. Your browser must feel very inadequate not being able to watch basically anything.:2 cents:

if you click the file it downloaded it will open in media player, your situation is because you dont have windows media player plugin installed in chrome, i believe the next time you update media player it will install the plugin for you. This problem only exists in ff and chrome with no plugin installed, although firefox will prompt you to open it in windows media player

Errr I watch whatever I want to watch. That's the beauty of noscript, I choose what I want to watch... not what some "unblockable popup" wants me to watch.

Varius 05-17-2010 09:21 AM

Why don't you guys just use some simple jQuery to emulate a popup that never gets blocked and is much more cross-browser friendly ?

will76 05-17-2010 09:26 AM

So it displays the website inside of windows media player? never seen anything like that before, i am looking at a web page instead of a video playing inside of the windows media player box. Is this the way it was suppose to work? When i close windows media player I see a new window had been launched as well.

you mean anything without script ? meaning basically nothing.

Un-blockable for my purpose means by conventional popup blockers . if i really wanted to i would put the hook inside a flash file you were trying to watch making your noscript useless :)

well this isn't your usual popup, lots of people use hover type ads so i wanted to make something unique.

i also built a version of what your talking about to promote paperstreetcash

you can test out the example on your site here

or see what gfy would look like using it

well you should have seen a video first then a short ad , then by default it redirects to the website inside of windows media player.

What browser/os you got ?

it isn't for everyone/site , maybe you have a high traffic low yield site and want to maximize your profits

lol people hate telemarketters too but they obviously do work :)

Most of the news sites have the old "first click popunder" on them , if they didn't work they wouldn't try so hard to make them work

LoveSandra 05-17-2010 09:54 AM

Interesting...

SmokeyTheBear 05-17-2010 10:04 AM

there are alot of cool uses for this in adult besides being a popup if anyone is interested in the tech behind it

The file is a .wvx which is a windows media player audio/visual playlist. Many people aren't aware media player can play flash files inside media player as well as .gif .png. .jpg and many others including displaying an entire website. right click and save THIS FILE to your desktop. Try it then drag it into notepad to see whats going on.

You can script slideshows with clickable banners the user can save to his/her computer that take up no space at all as they are basically like a bookmark in windows media player

OH, ok if it was just for the purposes of experimenting and doing something different, then more power to you :)

Not a lot of people are creating really mind-blowing ads using jQuery yet though ( at least not in adult); so there is still a lot of room for improvement there.

I was never a javascript fan myself, but am becoming one now thanks to some of the cool stuff jQuery can do that is so under-utilized...

Once the current adult project I'm working on launches, I think people will be quite impressed :)

on the contrary.... depends on your marketing. If you are branding your main site that you want people to come back to over and over again I would probably not use a pop up page.

The majority of my traffic is active advertising, I basically get one shot at them.

Years back before pop up blockers I would have 2 - 3 pop ups off of an advertising page. The 3rd one would make a little money, but after that it was a waste, there was little to no sales past the 3rd pop up. (i hated those damn never ending pop up loops pointless and annoying).

I made thousands a week from my exit traffic via pop ups back then. Even today I still use 1 pop up, which gets blocked the majority of the time and still make money from it. It might be 10% what it was back then but I will take a couple extra hundred dollars a week for free right now that I would have never gotten anyway. If I could find a way to beat the pop up blocker for even 1 page to pop up I know I could increase my revenue $500 - $1000 a week or more right now.

Just another reason why I use NoScript. I'm not sure why you think it is okay to hit people with a popup when you know that 99% of people don't want to see one.

99% of people don't want ads on tv.
99% of people don't want to see ads period.
99% of people want gold bars for free and their asses wiped for them.

Do you do or use any advertising at all ? why do you think its ok to display ads when clearly people dont like ads and want every site to run superbly fast at no cost ? defend yourself you villain :winkwink:

My anti-hijacker plugin blocked it and banned the domain automatically. You can't launch something like that without permissions :)

lol nice try theres nothing tricky about it to block, its straight media player code, if your plugin blocks that then it blocks all videos and/or scripting.

noscript can block it , although i could make it run without scripting and run the script in media player that noscript doesnt block

Well, the thing is if I click (request) it myself, it wont block. But if an external application like mediaplayer is launched in the background without permission it blocks it.

It's a plugin for my firewall. Browsers are too easy to get around for attackers.

bullshit.. its not launched in the background , its a straight up video , many sites including microsoft use it, just nobody used it as a popup :) IF you had a plugin that auto banned the domain i can only imagine like "noscript" that you wade thru false hit after false hit in an unfunctional browsing experience.

Whats it called ?

Dirty Dane 05-17-2010 11:46 PM

It was Kaspersky Anti-Hacker. I tried again and there was actually a popup (in IE), but it stopped the connection.

Dirty Dane 05-17-2010 11:52 PM

In Firefox it doesn't pop up for me. It ask me what to do with the file. Open, download or cancel.

ProG 05-18-2010 10:50 AM

Chrome issues a warning (after the download prompt) about attempting to download multiple files and gives the option to Allow/Deny. I consider myself to be fairly up-to-date with updates, so there is zero chance the average surfer has more than I do.

I always appreciate feedback :thumbsup, but you are misinformed and i can prove it.

I have been running this on a site to test and i record browser strings on page and in the banner inside the video , something that can only be seen by people it "worked" for. So i know exactly how many chrome users see it and how many don't and your theoretical numbers are way off real world numbers :)
