Congress has been holding hearings about the oil spill into the Gulf
...and today one of the people to testify was a National Geographic scientist. She reiterated what a previous biologist had stated. The dispersants being used are more deadly to the ocean than the oil itself is. She said the dispersants are only for cosmetics but in fact are...as we speak...killing life in the ocean. In some instances...life that we may not be aware of...but is none the less very important to the oceans eco system. She also reiterated what the biologist said...and that is...the dispersant will kill coral and when the coral dies...the life that the coral supports will die.
She said that some species of fish in the Gulf has already been reduced by 80-90% due to over fishing and that this spill...with the combination of dispersants/oil...could possibly kill off the remaining 10-20%...and for those that...may...survive will not be fit for human consumption because one of the ingrediants of the dispersants is arsenic. |
Another thing that has come up during the hearings is that since the Valdez spill those many years ago...although we have continued to drill...baby drill...the technics to clean up spills has not been improved upon as money has not been spent on R&D to improve upon the technology to clean up spills...unfucking believable.

CORDOVA, Alaska ? As the oil spill spreads ominously in the Gulf of Mexico, its impact uncertain, communities here beside Prince William Sound are still confronting the consequences of March 24, 1989, the day of the wreck of the Exxon Valdez. The tanker Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil, staining 1,500 miles of coastline, killing hundreds of thousands of seabirds, otters, seals and whales, and devastating local communities. The spill stopped after just a few days. Recovery may not have an end date. The mountain views are still stunning but the herring fishery is gone, the king and Dungeness crabs, too. Prawns are coming back, but just barely. The loss of the herring industry over the years since the spill has cost the region about $400 million, said R. J. Kopchak of the Prince William Sound Science Center.

Oh.. not to worry.. Limbaugh says oil is natural just like water and it'll all take care of itself...

Obama has to protect the money he gets from BP
Most of the oil in the ocean water is naturally occurring, but not this concentrated, microbes eat it, that's the truth, it leaks into the water from the ocean floor with methane gas. |

Inquiring minds want to know.

Wait who thought dumping arsenic into the ocean was a good idea?
|
This is truly saddening and sickening.

Good thing Congress is on the case ! I feel so much better now. Thanks pal :thumbsup

just a couple comments,
the dispersants are more than cosmetic, by dispersing the oil, they break it down into smaller particles making it easier for the bacteria to consume it. i've read a few studies recently released that show prince williams sound returned to 90% normal with 10 years after the valdez spill, ecology-wise. the local fisherman sure had it tough. and the clean-up there was just as harsh on the environment as the spill. the studies show that just leaving the oil on the coast would of been better. |
i don't understand why they don't bring some type of blower/vacuum tube to suck on oil stream and filling ship tanks while looking for more solid solution, who cares if that oil is mixed with water at least it would not spill as much in to the ocean. once they get that going then they could try and seal open area between the hole and the vacuum tube.
something like this, maybe few of them or much larger one: http://www.cures4you.net/images/phot...pparatus03.jpg i'm thinking they already put so much resources and money in it and still have no solution is just mind bugging |
