Google says Google TV coming this fall
Joint effort with Sony, Intel and Logitech calls for Google TV to ship this fall

After months of speculation, Google Thursday unveiled Google TV, described as a way to meld surfing the Internet with channel surfing.

At the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco early this afternoon, the company announced that it's working with Intel, Sony, and Logitech to develop Google TV as an open platform.

TV-maker Sony hasn't released pricing plans for the so-called smart televisions, which could go on sale as early as this fall.

In what officials called a true team effort, Intel will supply microprocessors for the Sony-built televisions, while Google provides its Android operating system, Chrome Web browser and other tools.

Logitech is building a special remote control, along with a wireless keyboard for the system. Third parties can add other applications to the system.

Google officials said the offering aims to offer TV watchers the search capabilities and video options of the Web they see on the Web.

"It's about making your TV more than just TV," said a Google spokesman.

At the demo in today's conference keynote, Google compared a basic TV channel guide to a Google TV.

Using Google's well-known search capabilities, the system is designed to let users search for when their favorite show will be on next or when a Red Sox game will be airing.

Once the search findings come up, users will be able to click on an upcoming airing and automatically set it to be recorded to the DVR.

Rob Enderle, an analyst with the Enderle Group, says the Google TV features are good ideas that have been a long time coming.

"In the right format and with the right usage model and customer experience, people could adopt this," added Enderle. "Folks probably won't be doing much browsing on their TV. But consuming Internet media? Certainly. Up until now it has been too difficult for most to do that. Google is moving to change that."

Enderle said Google TV could prove to be a big money maker for the company.

"It's the first step to displacing the network affiliates and cable companies as controlling entities," he said. "While Google won't get all of the related revenue, they'll likely get enough of it. To do this well, they will need to focus, demonstrate very high quality, and not piss off governments so their goal becomes unachievable."

How long until Eric puts a ban on your copy and pasting? Ruining it for everyone else...because he bans posting news from other sites or some shit like that.

You've been singled out, why rock the boat? It's pretty obvious as to what you're doing, and it's not sharing this amazing news.

Google TV - unbelievable. Google looks like it is growing.

What exactly is the problem?

Probably, LOL

If it looks anything like all their other shitty UI work you can count me out though. I like an engaging experience when I use my entertainment center... Something like Boxee or this guy's XBMC UI... gorgeous:

Tons of people paste news here - that's a staple of GFY, and everyone knows it.

I guess when you have that much money as Google, you can do afford to do all these things. Honestly, I think that the private sectors are trying to find a way to get some of the Google ad dollars, and capitalize on the data mining.

Who can really blame them?

Myself I am curious how much further Google can go before they start getting into the government's cross hairs like Microsoft and others.

They could also afford to have a half ass customer support team for AdSense but they don't! They have the worst customer service I've ever experienced at any level from any company... ever...

That's my point, and he's been singled out for "spamming his sig" multiple ways. He's not posting this to bring info, he doesn't care about Google TV...he's just copy and pasting to drop his sig. Which he's already been warned about.

Staple or not, if it's abused there's the chance it can be "taken away".

I happen to be interested in this conversation and the only thing I see out of line here is your posts berating Barefootsies... and if he didn't post it, someone else would have.

Exactly.

How many times does this piss ant follow me about with these remarks? You would think that some grown adults would have better things to do then stalk strangers on a message board all day. Derailing threads with his personal hate agenda adding nothing to the O.P. at all? It's nice to see him getting called out on it. :thumbsup

I happen to be interested in the articles I post up, and typically go back and forth in replies with those who add something to the O.P. in regards to my opinion and views on it. There are technology, and industry news, that are of interest to me and I would like to hear from others who are full timer in the industry on the subject. If people do not read the article, it's kind of hard for me to have a business discussion on it.

I suppose I could just put, "Discuss", as others have done in the past. :disgust

Google has a knack for getting people to adopt their tech and if this is adopted by enough of the consumer base then this is going to be something EVERYONE here should be leveraging...

This post is applicable to the adult industry, noteworthy, and can help people get a jump start on new tech to stream porn via a new method... How many other GFY threads can you say that about, lol

News is news, who ever posts it. I agree.
This is interesting news he probably wanted to share.
Saves surfing dozens of sites and time looking for interesting news, if it's on gfy with one click.
I have no beef with Foots. Why should I? I decide what to click, what to ignore and what to read myself, like everybody else here.

True dat.

I am frankly baffled we do not read more about Boxxxy and some of those other gadgets you can pick up from Best Buy to watch porn on your computer on TV. I would think getting primed for that rush would be key.

The trades have been talking about Boxxxy for months now and what some companies are doing to position themselves. A real threat to most would be technology further phasing out some of the online players who can't get into these applications.

Yet on the boards.... *crickets*

thats a pretty interesting read...you think the new TVs will also be vulnurable to virus?

I think it's going to depend on the technology being used. Time will tell.

I see a few different things coming down the pike technologically in regards to iTV type of applications. It will be interesting to see how the internet, and porn, bend to these new delivery systems.

As long as TV's don't pop "As the world turns", I am ok with it :1orglaugh

Awesome, now I can use Google Wave and Google Buzz and Google Video on my Google TV. I just hope it's compatible with all the new stuff Google comes out with that nobody uses.

Will they advertise this with Google Print and Radio Ads?

Google must have the highest ratio of failures to successes in the history of business.

No disrespect to the Boxxxe/Boxxxy devs but I'm not really big on their implementation. Essentially it's a generic media streamer and the problem is it doesn't even appear when you download Boxee .. instead you have to jump through hoops to get it setup.

Not only that it's generic and plain looking... It would be better to develop and independent solution for each site that wanted to implement it and then have each site do their own design for the app... each would be a separate app so it would appear under the "Apps" section of Boxee by itself... Like the Suicide Girls App...

Actually... I tried to pitch an alternate version to Shap and sent him about 5 emails over a year ago now. I had an in with a guy that had some VERY slick framework for a stand alone app that I could have been completely branded; creating a full immersive experience for delivering all video and pics... Not only that it worked with a variety of different techs.. in fact my TV handles it natively (samsung)... Everything is still served from the same content servers so the up front cost is minimal and the pay off... well. How about offering an app directly on your site that installs on Mac or Windows which gives you a whole different experience while ON your PC not to mention you could enjoy the entire content library from any tv with an xbox, ps3, computer, etc... hooked up to it...

Alas I couldn't get him to write me back and I'm back to focusing on my core project so... oh well! Seriously, what a value add though...

But when they have a success, it's typically an out of the park homer.
