question for web hosts..

I'm not looking to buy service, just curious.

Q: shipping out hard drives at request

- is it a regular service? or extra service to keep clients happy? how much for each service?
- how much labour for the whole process -install new hdd/format/take out/shipping/etc
- what are the shipping rates? esp international. some examples? us>australia us>uk

So you want a copy of your hard drive from the DC?

Way too many variables for a simple answer. Part including where you are shipping to. As that would make a difference in cost. As would the size of the drive. Some may charge a 'handling fee' if you have to have it packaged up a certain way because of the data/electronics/etc..

I would bet the 'cost' would vary by host.

If your server has a hotswap bay it would make things a lot easier for the tech. Without it the server would need to be powered off and deracked since the drives can only be accessed by removing the top cover.

As to the actual costs... it would vary from host to host, many probably wouldn't do it at all.

sounds like a headache for the host... I wouldn't be surprised if the host would bill few hundred bucks for this service... unless you are a vip client...

I know I've sent hard drives to National Net before and had them load them up on a server. Much easier that way. Never had them send one back to me.

Generally, we do not charge anything for the data copy or transfer. Client just pays shipping and then shipping back if they want us to send the drive back.

This is of course assuming this is a managed dedicated client :)
