best way to determine number of backlinks?

Not looking for any tools or services, looking for the best raw method using the search engines themselves. What is the best option available for determining active backlink numbers? Seems like a lot of people prefer to use Yahoo's Site Explorer s Google tends to leave a lot out when physically searching their engine for inbound links. Any better methods?

fatfoo 05-31-2010 09:16 PM

I don't know. I agree that Google leaves many links out.

AmeliaG 05-31-2010 09:50 PM

I always use Google and Yahoo, on the theory that Google inbound are more important links, but Yahoo inbound are more complete links.

Google webmaster tools doesn't show all the links although it is a good tool. Makes sense though from a reverse engineering perspective

"Back links" are the most over-rated factors by webmasters seeking to improve
with google.

Please read people, I don't care what extension, plugin, app, or service you use. They all fall back on the search engines for their data. So which is the best source?

It's looking as though Yahoo Site Explorer is the method of choice. Can anyone argue this? Google simply does not display all of it's known backlinks in the search. I'm going to look over Google Webmaster Tools. I generally avoid Google products, but this may be an instance it comes in handy. Gonna compare the two, does Bing/MSN have a likewise tool?

Angry Jew Cat - Banned for Life 06-01-2010 08:35 PM

Typical Google "Add some Google code to your site, & jump through all our hoops" bullshit. I'll use Yahoo's tool.

Bird 06-01-2010 11:21 PM

some good info in here...

craftyc 06-01-2010 11:38 PM

just have a look at the chrome seo plugin tool. I realise you might be trying to write your own backlink analyser or whatever but it is definitely worth a look. It has alot of info in there and its concise and easy to use.

georgeyw 06-02-2010 01:42 AM

I like using using Yahoo's tool. More info and seems more accurate to me.

Useful thread.

Most backlink checker sites i've looked at seemed to tell you a big number but only display 1000 results.

By making an uneducated assertion about something that's demonstrable?

You're an idiot, stop typing.
