Are Your Veggies Poisonous?

If you're eating non-organic celery today, you may be ingesting 67 pesticides with it, according to a new report from the Environmental Working Group.

The group, a nonprofit focused on public health, scoured nearly 100,000 produce pesticide reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to determine what fruits and vegetables we eat have the highest, and lowest, amounts of chemical residue.

If it wasn't for pesticides, I wouldn't have such a healthy green stalk.

Sometimes there are articles in the newspaper about certain food items being banned in grocery stores, because poisonous foods have been found.

Wasn't there a study released recently that found no substantive difference in health benefits between organic and non-organic veggies?

Yes. So called "organic" foods are no more nutirious for you than normal foods. Further, if only organic farming methods were used World wide there would only be enough food to feed around 2 Billion people on Earth.

Quite an efficiency shortfall there.

Very informative video.

----

As a nation, if we push for more organic foods, they will become cheaper.

So inform your friends, neighbors and families.

Good movies to watch: KILLER AT LARGE, FOOD INC, Fast Food Nation

There was.

But you can't go round feeling like a right smug git if you don't buy organic.

We will die faster for sure, poison will kill us slowly

there's been a couple hundred studies done on this, the results vary. moreover, some of the studies i've read on this neglected to study the impact the pesticides have.
also, these studies don't investigate the impact of *non-crucial* nutrients such as flavanoids and betacarotene

the studies i've read on this show that the world currently produces the equivalent of 2786 calories per person per day. The researchers found that under an organic-only regime, farms could produce between 2641 and 4381 calories per person per day.

the issue is more in regards to distribution, not production.

Any idea what the shelf-life is on organic compared to chemically assisted?

Tom_PM 06-02-2010 08:54 AM

Growing your own kicks ass. It's nice to just walk to the garden and pick whatever is ready. If I dont put pesticide on my plants, there is no pesticide on my plants (they're indoor). I pick right off the plant and eat raw for the most part.

i am not sure of the overall #s but i can't tell a difference with the organic/non-organic items i consume.

:)

ottopottomouse 06-02-2010 09:13 AM

I just wondered with your similar numbers of calories produced whether food would get wasted before consumption if the organic stuff wasn't going to be edible for as long.

saucygirl 06-02-2010 09:23 AM

More reasons to just grow your own garden.
