Does your host let you use nginx?

Or does your host or system administrator insist on using Apache?

You can do whatever you want with a dedicated server :)

Not with managed hosting at some of these popular companies.

He is probably talking about managed servers. Most managed servers are Apache.

Edit: ^see

nginx runs great on top of apache too, handling static content very fast with less memory and resources

All my servers are unmanaged, but if this was the case I'd switch :2 cents:

any decent host will manage whatever web server you choose... :2 cents:

I think it's that they don't want to support it, or know enough about configuring it. It's been around a long time now and has become pretty well established.

Sometimes it can save you from spending more money on upgrading server hardware, so they should start supporting it.

We are an unmanaged but you can add management to any machine a la carte hosting company, and we still support nginx and lighttpd along with Apache.

sandman! 06-07-2010 04:28 PM

a few years ago most of the hosts did not know what nginx was even nowdays most should be able to support it in a limited basis at least.

I'm pushing nearly 3 gigabits on a single server with nginx - plenty of spare overhead too.

Normally I push lighttpd for my high traffic operations, but in this case it just couldn't keep up after 2 gigabits and all 500+ megabyte files.

I love this little piece of software, allows me to push my servers further than I ever thought possible.

Argos88 06-07-2010 10:19 PM

so are you saying that a server using that is always faster than one using apache??

why do you quote google article. the word "nginx" is not written anywhere in that article...

just wondering.

The hosts are still LAMP addicted... Not without good reason, change takes time.

abshard 06-08-2010 04:43 AM

I use apache and nginx for thumbs on the same server at yellowfiber

nginx made a huge difference
