BP hires the unemployed for clean-up - Jun 2010

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Embattled oil giant BP is amassing a small army of 4,500 unemployed workers in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida to be ready on short notice to clean oil off the Gulf coast beaches. Beach cleaners will be paid $18 and hour and supervisors $32 and hour, according to Deb Witmer, BP public affairs officer.
BP (BP) aims to have at least 1,500 workers in Mississippi, 1,000 in Alabama and 1,600 in Florida, Witmer said. LINK

:2 cents: BP is stimulating the tough economy and the recession. This is job creation right before your eyes! Big kudos to BP for hiring the unemployed. Now if they only hadn't killed a piece of the planet in the process. :disgust

I wonder if this resets these employees unemployment when they get laid off at the end?

2MuchMark 06-08-2010 08:28 AM

I wonder if they also have health insurance? You can bet that many of these people will start getting sick in the near future...

They'll probably all get sick and die from exposure to that fucking poison.

dyna mo 06-08-2010 08:31 AM

eesh amp!

Vendzilla 06-08-2010 08:36 AM

I wonder if they will get laid off, then rehired in an attempt by the WH to say more jobs have been created?

Undoubtedly this (BP's temporary hire clean-up force) will get rolled into the "new" jobs stats one way or another.

Sorry brutha, and everyone else too... I realize this is a purely negative post. I'm running out of any positive outlook for this disaster.

Raf1 06-08-2010 08:49 AM

they're trying to save what's left of their image. I doubt it will do them any good

seeandsee 06-08-2010 08:50 AM

18$ per hour, 8hours = 144$ x 26 = ~4k
Sweet

Amputate Your Head 06-08-2010 08:54 AM

I suppose we could say, if they don't get chemical poisoning along the way, they've got job security for quite a while, since it will take decades to clean that shit up.

cwd 06-08-2010 08:54 AM

yeah BP, they are awesome!

Scott McD 06-08-2010 08:57 AM

The BP assholes sitting in officies wearng suits should be the ones down there doing the cleaning up work... :2 cents:

Fbomb - BANNED FOR LIFE 06-08-2010 08:58 AM

They will probably hire illegal mexicans. bigots like NikiLiks or brassmonkey will not want to do that kind of job but they will BS on gfy board all day long.

Amputate Your Head 06-08-2010 09:08 AM

They should gather up some of the hardcore inmates from around the country... the ones locked up for murder & rape & shit... and put them to work down there just like they routinely do for road clean up.
Not only would it cost less and keep the civilians down there alive longer, but would reduce the prison population back down to sustainable levels via chem poisoning, thereby also saving the taxpayers some coin on prisoner housing, appeals trials and state funded executions for the death row fellas.

WebCashMaker 06-08-2010 09:14 AM

I seen on the news because of the sun and heat. They work for 20 mins and then get a 40 min break !

ottopottomouse 06-08-2010 09:15 AM

How long till some FACT!! spouter comes along and says the whole disaster has been a pre-planned way of fiddling the unemployment figures?

DiF0r 06-08-2010 09:17 AM

that's cool

Fletch XXX 06-08-2010 09:25 AM

meanwhile, in reality, I have dozens of cousins who just got sent home claiming "they dont want us working man, they are trying to hire illegals to do this" word on the st anyhow...

I wouldnt believe shit the media says, especially a "BP public affairs" person....I have cousins with boats who were sent home from clean up claiming "we have enough help" - have many family were cleaning beaches.

LOLz they prolly already outsourcing it to the illegals bro. Have family who was cleaning grand Isle and all along the gulf coast, coincedentally, all were employed BEFORe the spill, now are being sent home and are "not needed" - Im talking more than 10 people I know. How can they all be needed for weeks, then all of a sudden, "not needed?"

cherrylula 06-08-2010 09:28 AM

yeah we have local family and friends telling us otherwise.

when Obama went to Grand Isle, BP brought in their own workers in red white and blue uniforms.

I was thinking to myself here, this is probably next. Then I thought, nah.... they'd never do that. I guess when it comes to BP, we have yet to see the true depth of their evil.

I spent a day with family at weekend child birthday party on Sunday and got first hand stories of whats happening on the beach... and every single member of my family who was previously working on cleanup was miracously "not needed anymore" - i am talking about dozens of people, not just 1 or 2.

damn man that is fucked up bad.... BP seems to have lost it's corporate minds. With all the eyes on them now they should be trying their best to make it look like they are doing everything possible especially to the locals

It's almost as if BP is still pulling from the old world playbook on this. Like they don't realize or understand how the Internet has put the entire world's eyes upon them and their disaster like never before.

Fletch XXX 06-08-2010 01:30 PM

yes that is a very staged photo, id put money those guys didnt even stand on the beach long before or after that photo shoot. for one they are TOO CLEAN to actually be working beach cleanup, the people I know who did it were filthy from it, those guys just came from the cleaners.

cherrylula 06-08-2010 01:36 PM

those guys would be drenched in sweat... its SOOO hot and humid down here right now. And those white pants are hilarious, straight out of the ET movie. What are the reflector vests for?? they're not on a freeway lol

oh yeah most important... where's the OIL??? they are raking seaweed. is that some sort of stock photo? I wonder.

fatfoo 06-08-2010 01:38 PM

That is a lot of cleaning up. Beautiful white sand is littered with the garbage.
