Advanced server side tracking via pixel? I have a stalker

I have a stalker, someone who has gone way overboard and knows much personal information about myself. I am trying to pin down who this person is. My idea is this:

I want to load a clear pixel on my server and insert it into a message so that once it is loaded I can hope to at least gather their IP (if not more). I will then send a pixel to the two people who I think it might be, to try and match the IP.

How can this be done? Any ideas? I realize it would be much easier and I could gather much more data by having them visit a website but they know I am crafty with computers and likely would not click any links which I sent them.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. :thumbsup

I'm thinking send an HTML based email with a tracking pixel that will get what you need when the message is opened (even if nothing is clicked) and then compare that to the IP addresses in your server logs?

That is what I am trying to do. Is there any way to gather additional information via loading a pixel though?

papill0n 06-12-2010 01:02 PM

you make a 1x1 px gif

host it

include it in email

send email to stalker

check server stats

Won't work if images in emails are blocked.

st0ned 06-12-2010 01:07 PM

They are not educated enough to use a proxy, I know that much. This is mostly via facebook, so I am assuming I will be able to insert an image just fine into the body of the email. I know how to insert the pixel, was just wondering if there were any advanced methods or something I could setup server side to allow me to gather more data.

ottopottomouse 06-12-2010 01:08 PM

Can't you just send them a fake Facebook email with your link in like all the your account is on delete click here to rescue it ones seeing as just about everybody on the planet except me has got Facebook..

st0ned 06-12-2010 01:10 PM

They know how savvy I am on the computer, they wouldn't click anything, I know that 100%. That is why I am trying to accomplish it with a pixel, they wont even know it is there.

Are you doing tracking on your profile?

But not savvy enough to email them from a spoofed address.

I'm lucky enough to have the same name as someone famous so even I can't find out anything about me :)

It isn't going to work, so I am not going to waste my time. I do not have a direct address from this person to begin with. I cannot spoof a facebook admin email to a facebook inbox.

ottopottomouse 06-12-2010 01:35 PM

So, the only contact you have with them is through Facebook, you want to find out info about them, and they are the one stalking you.

I am not going to elaborate on details. I am simply asking for suggestions on how to best accomplish this. I am simply trying to have definitive proof of who this person is before I approach them. This isn't some random person, it is someone who has A LOT of information about myself.

st0ned 06-12-2010 01:46 PM

It appears that I am unable to insert an image into the body of a message anymore. So now I am lost as to how I can retrieve their IP. Sigh..

ottopottomouse 06-12-2010 01:49 PM

Just messing with you.

Everything you could do is being restricted by you only being able to contact them through Facebook though.

I suppose you could create a fake profile and go at them through that.

I have tried this. I am dealing with a fake profile to begin with so really the only way I am going to be able to trace who it actually it is if I can gather their IP.

woj 06-12-2010 01:58 PM

send them an email, "hey check out this cool site" and make it lead to a unique page on your site... then check server logs

I have yet to respond to this person and only want to do so once to gain their IP. The profile was setup for the sole purpose of harassing me and the only friends on their list are my friends. I am 99% sure I wont be able to get them to click anything. Any other ideas? When inserting an image facebook automatically loads it and will not include my image take in the email. I have tried bb code, html, etc.

Ethersync 06-12-2010 02:06 PM

You don't have their real email address? You only know their Facebook account?

tical 06-12-2010 02:06 PM

just send them a response saying i know who you are, all of your info is right here (URL w/ some landing page of BS), then read the logs and see who it was

it's your best bet

Correct. They have sent me no correspondence from anything aside from facebook. I think it is one of two people, had planned to gather the IP from the fake profile and each of their IPs using the same method and cross reference the IPs to see who it is. My original plan has been foiled by facebook not allowing me to insert a remotely hosted image.

Very true, I will try this if I cannot find something better. Thanks. :thumbsup

You cannot use a hidden tracking pixel on Facebook. It will simply not work due to Facebooks extensive privacy platform.

As an example Facebook will download the pictures through their own proxy, cache it, and serve this cached version to the Facebook users.

Your server's logfile will never get the IP, user-agent or other headers from the user. Instead you will get Facebook's own IP.

I think your only option is to lure him out of Facebook with links.

Then you can have your hidden tracking pixel on some message board, or other place with less privacy security than Facebook.

Also forget about sending those hidden things in emails. It is a standard-setting in most email clients to block "retrieval of external files". For this very reason.

Good luck :upsidedow

Thank you. That is exactly what I was trying to accomplish, yet as far as I know it is not possible since facebook wont allow me to embed a remotely hosted image (pixel) into the body of a message.

I also assumed I would gather facebooks IP rather than the users as a result of how they process images. Thanks for the input, much appreciated. :thumbsup

Why do you even care? how do you have time in your day to worry about what people are looking at on your facebook account?

I am not worried about what people are looking at. As I stated earlier I am not going to elaborate on details. Just that this person is causing problems in my current relationship, with family, etc. It is an ongoing thing and they continue to cause problems for me. I simply want to put an end to it.

st0ned 06-12-2010 02:33 PM

I think I will let this thread die off now. Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I am currently going through the headers of the message notifications that facebook sends to my email. A lot of the info is encoded and apparently their IP is encoded somewhere in there.

dunno imo if any outside influence causes problems with your friends/family/relationship your friends/family/relationship are not that strong in the first place.

if my family was influenced by anyone about me i would tell them to fuck off. because people either know what you are about or not. if they are affected by what other people say they are most likely losers themselves. same with girlfriends. those chicks are drama queens who let outside influences affect things.

lets hear some details! im in drama queen mode.

that is just my opinion anyway. good luck. :)

if protecting something causes you undue stress it is prob not worth protecting in the firstplace.

SpongeBub 06-13-2010 01:08 PM

Set up a web page and only give them the URL. Figure a way to get them to visit it (not knowing it is your page, of course). Of course, if they do this from a computer other than their own, the IP will be worthless. And what exactly would you do with an IP address? Unless you are the RIAA or the MPAA, no ISP will give you any info about who owns that IP.

I have tracking set up on a few pages that have my real last name on them.

Two things you can look into that you don't even have to set up is naymz.com and linkedin.com. I think for something like $9 a month naymz will report to you the ip address and the search query used to hit your profile, and then linkedin shows some limited info on who looks you up and hits your page.

Also to trace IP addresses I think the best site is http://www.ip-adress.com :2 cents:
