Advanced server side tracking via pixel? I have a stalker
I have a stalker, someone who has gone way overboard and knows much personal information about myself. I am trying to pin down who this person is. My idea is this:
I want to load a clear pixel on my server and insert it into a message so that once it is loaded I can hope to at least gather their IP (if not more). I will then send a pixel to the two people who I think it might be, to try and match the IP. How can this be done? Any ideas? I realize it would be much easier and I could gather much more data by having them visit a website but they know I am crafty with computers and likely would not click any links which I sent them. Any input would be greatly appreciated. :thumbsup |
I'm thinking send an HTML based email with a tracking pixel that will get what you need when the message is opened (even if nothing is clicked) and then compare that to the IP addresses in your server logs?

They are not educated enough to use a proxy, I know that much. This is mostly via facebook, so I am assuming I will be able to insert an image just fine into the body of the email. I know how to insert the pixel, was just wondering if there were any advanced methods or something I could setup server side to allow me to gather more data.

Can't you just send them a fake Facebook email with your link in like all the your account is on delete click here to rescue it ones seeing as just about everybody on the planet except me has got Facebook..
|
They know how savvy I am on the computer, they wouldn't click anything, I know that 100%. That is why I am trying to accomplish it with a pixel, they wont even know it is there.

So, the only contact you have with them is through Facebook, you want to find out info about them, and they are the one stalking you.

It appears that I am unable to insert an image into the body of a message anymore. So now I am lost as to how I can retrieve their IP. Sigh..

Just messing with you.
Everything you could do is being restricted by you only being able to contact them through Facebook though. I suppose you could create a fake profile and go at them through that. |

send them an email, "hey check out this cool site" and make it lead to a unique page on your site... then check server logs

You don't have their real email address? You only know their Facebook account?
|
just send them a response saying i know who you are, all of your info is right here (URL w/ some landing page of BS), then read the logs and see who it was
it's your best bet |

You cannot use a hidden tracking pixel on Facebook. It will simply not work due to Facebooks extensive privacy platform.
As an example Facebook will download the pictures through their own proxy, cache it, and serve this cached version to the Facebook users. Your server's logfile will never get the IP, user-agent or other headers from the user. Instead you will get Facebook's own IP. I think your only option is to lure him out of Facebook with links. Then you can have your hidden tracking pixel on some message board, or other place with less privacy security than Facebook. Also forget about sending those hidden things in emails. It is a standard-setting in most email clients to block "retrieval of external files". For this very reason. Good luck :upsidedow |

Why do you even care? how do you have time in your day to worry about what people are looking at on your facebook account?

I think I will let this thread die off now. Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I am currently going through the headers of the message notifications that facebook sends to my email. A lot of the info is encoded and apparently their IP is encoded somewhere in there.

if my family was influenced by anyone about me i would tell them to fuck off. because people either know what you are about or not. if they are affected by what other people say they are most likely losers themselves. same with girlfriends. those chicks are drama queens who let outside influences affect things. lets hear some details! im in drama queen mode. that is just my opinion anyway. good luck. :) if protecting something causes you undue stress it is prob not worth protecting in the firstplace. |

Set up a web page and only give them the URL. Figure a way to get them to visit it (not knowing it is your page, of course). Of course, if they do this from a computer other than their own, the IP will be worthless. And what exactly would you do with an IP address? Unless you are the RIAA or the MPAA, no ISP will give you any info about who owns that IP.

I have tracking set up on a few pages that have my real last name on them. Two things you can look into that you don't even have to set up is naymz.com and linkedin.com. I think for something like $9 a month naymz will report to you the ip address and the search query used to hit your profile, and then linkedin shows some limited info on who looks you up and hits your page. Also to trace IP addresses I think the best site is http://www.ip-adress.com :2 cents: |
