Why America does not like Football.

They are not good enough at it.

They love sports they are top at, Baseball, American Football, Ice Hockey and Basketball. Even if the rest of the world hardly plays some of these sports it does not matter, they are the top at them. Where do they play Baseball or American Football in earnest beside America?

They even call the Baseball finals The World Series . :upsidedow

If the USA Football team rises to the top 5 nations in the world then Americans will start to love it. Until then it will be a minor sport in the US.

It's called Football not soccer. American Football has little to do with feet except for kicking the extra point, standing and running on. :1orglaugh

Highest Def 06-13-2010 06:02 AM

Sorry, it's just not that deep. If you grow up here not playing soccer, then you don't care about it. It has nothing to do with how well our team does. Most of us don't follow it closely enough to even know how they do, but we will fanatically follow our favorite baseball or football teams no matter how shitty their record is.

You are also the one millionth person to make the joke about football not having anything to do with feet. You win a balloon.

Kids have been playing soccer in schools for years. Maybe it will grow in popularity as the 2nd and 3rd generation get into it.

candyflip 06-13-2010 06:09 AM

It is a myth that Americans don't like soccer.

17 million Americans participate in organized leagues every year in the US.

Did you know that you could be fined up to $10,000 per email you send after a person sends 3 request to you to remove their email from your mailing list?

Lot's of info in this thread.

dyna mo 06-13-2010 06:49 AM

that's the stupidest fucking thing you've said here.

Va2k 06-13-2010 06:53 AM

I wouldn't mind watching your type of football, but I never see it on our tv's *shrugs* but then again I don't like sports!

punkpred 06-13-2010 07:00 AM

I hate when they call their "local" championships "world series" its arrogant and have been proven not to be the best at most of the sports any longer besides American Football they have been beaten in every other sport.
Fresh memory was the Ice Hockey "Fail" :P

Spudstr 06-13-2010 07:07 AM

as an American, American Football is not the worlds best sport we claim it to be.

It actually has to be one of the worst "sports" you don't do anything for any extended period of time. its all done in 3-10 seconds bursts.

Hell at least in basketball is more constant moving and more activity than american football and I hate both!

Quit the hate. More like jealousy. Americans call it soccer not football. Get over it. Please start talking about "football" to Americans when you mean soccer and see how many looks you get. We're not changing the name. Listen in the UK fries are called chips and chips in the US are something completely different. Now if I'm in the UK I'm not going to go around telling everyone they need to call "chips" fries even though when you think about it fries are actually FRIED hence the name. And they certainly don't resemble what one would think chips should look like. So if I'm in the UK and I want fries I'm going to order "chips" no matter how stupid I think the name is.

Oh by the way I'm pretty sure Canadians would argue with you that Americans are better at hockey.

Honestly I'm not sure why non-Americans are so concerned that Americans call it soccer.

No they are not, British chips are thick slithers of whole potatos fried, fries are mashed up and reconstituted potato. One of the main reasons why most non-US people get annoyed about the US calling football, soccer is proberbly because when finally the Americans get it, they will demand that the name gets changed to soccer worldwide.

Babaganoosh 06-13-2010 07:24 AM

I love the European's "everyone else is doing it so why aren't you" attitude.

in fast food places sure but lots of restaurants make fries from whole potatoes right there in the restaurant.

But didnt they just draw thier first game against England ? if you DRAW in a match against someone doesnt it put you on par with them ?

BFT3K 06-13-2010 07:49 AM

The US LOVES football - it is soccer that it doesn't care much about.

That's true too - unless you're there live. The game isn't any better, but there's often a nice vibe, and a good excuse to have a few beers outdoors..

Yep you tell em Hank :thumbsup

Nurgle 06-13-2010 08:15 AM

they dislike it cause there isnt enough TV breaks, or time outs, or general wasting of time throughout the game.. they prefer their 40-50min games to last 3 hours

ruff 06-13-2010 08:19 AM

Eventually America will dominate Soccer and then you will piss and moan about that. That will be the point that the term Soccer will supersede Futball. Either us or China, I mean.

David! 06-13-2010 08:21 AM

It's not America that does not like football/soccer, it is corporate America that can't show anything on "free" TV without killing it with advertising...

ahoy 06-13-2010 08:26 AM

Why is it such a debate in figuring out why SOMEONE ELSE dislikes a sport? I hate the stupid fucking sport, plain and simple. Stop trying to analyze why we/I don't like it.

Maybe its because the only winners in 3/4 the games seem to be the male fans that get to stare at the sexy female fans for 90 minutes. I mean come on, even MLB Baseball will stretch their games to 5 hours to determine a winner, and there are 162 damn games played. Draws in the World Cup? Next channel please....

It was just reported yesterday during one of the games that that figure is now upwards of 90 million in the US, although that figure sounded a little high to me. They said it was largely thanks to Beckham making the move to play for LA.

Whatever the number is it's high, much higher than it was 5 years ago. What this means to me is that soccer in the US is in fact growing a lot of grassroots depth, and out of all those millions of kids now playing the US is going to have stronger and stronger teams in future.

The rest of the world mocks the US over their constantly weak showings? Well guess what, you just poked the sleeping giant. :1orglaugh

90 million maybe paying attention. That I'd believe.

The town I grew up in had 60+ soccer fields and multiple clubs we could play with. This is one town in a city which a 20+ fairly decent sized suburbs.

On any given night during the summer, each and every one of those fields was being used.

I can't wait for my kids to be old enough to play.

Don't forget the Women either. Aren't the US Women #1? That's gotta at least get people to stop drumming up the myth that we don't like this game.

kids have always played soccer, it's a cheap sport and even the worst kid can play it. It's also super boring to watch most of the time. (just like basketball, which is only good for the last 3-4 mins if the game is close)

So most Americans don't like soccer. So what? We like dental hygiene, many other places don't. It's just a difference in opinion. Why does it matter if everyone likes the same shit?

DateDoc 06-13-2010 09:31 AM

A lot of people in the US like soccer. The main problem I see is that MLS is not big enough nor good enough to attract a huge viewership and to watch leagues in other countries live, such as the Premier League, the games are on at weird times and although some are broadcast later it is not the same as watching it live.

Come to think of it that announcer probably said 19 million. I may have heard him wrong what with all the crazy airhorns buzzing in the background.

19 million sounds more plausible. Still a hugely increased number than from 5 years ago. When the US starts winning world cups the world will blame it on Beckham.

do they show less tele commericals in europe and gb?

based on this wiki article, the % of commercials is ~the same for europe, gb and the usa so i don't see how the above comments apply.

we all get bombarded with commercials.

The American team is getting better. It's just a matter of time until the US wins its first WC.

American spectators don't like it due to the scoring system.
