Smokers: Get ready for $11 a pack cigarettes

Get ready for $11 a pack cigarettes - Jun 2010

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- New York City smokers already pay the highest cigarette taxes in the nation, but a new state law will push those taxes even higher this summer. ... This drives the average local price up to nearly $11 per pack, according to some estimates.

LINK

:2 cents: Good a time as any to quit I suppose. They aren't going to ever get any cheaper, that's for sure. :smokin

Juicy D. Links 06-22-2010 10:00 AM

again with the fucking cig taxesss

Karupted Charles 06-22-2010 10:03 AM

I was like $7 when I left. Its what like $9 now?

Amputate Your Head 06-22-2010 10:05 AM

I'm not even sure what it is per pack here in the Bay Area, we buy them by the carton. But I know we (wife & I) spend between $300 - $400 per month on cigarettes.

Vendzilla 06-22-2010 10:12 AM

check my sig, marlboro for just over $30 a carton delivered, no taxes. They are making a change to the shipping policy because of some BS that Obama did, but I don't think it's in effect yet

BestXXXPorn 06-22-2010 10:14 AM

Tobacco taxes are bullshit... they amount they tack on... it's like $0.52 per pack from the manufacturer... somehow it becomes $11 a pack in some places... WTF The founding fathers would roll over in their graves if they knew the amount of taxes on some products...

Smoker or no, this kind of taxation is completely unacceptable... the fact that they get away with it opens the doors to additional runaway taxation too :(

BFT3K 06-22-2010 10:18 AM

It is unclear why cigarettes are even still legal, but I suppose raising the cost makes money for the states and producers.

Higher prices will ultimately result in less people smoking, and maybe more people quitting - neither of which is a bad thing.

In a way I kind of hope gas prices double or triple again soon too, so maybe alternate energy will finally be taken seriously again as well, although I know that is off-topic. Sorry...

Evil Chris 06-22-2010 10:21 AM

smoking kills.... just quit already.

Serial Pervert 06-22-2010 10:25 AM

it's absurd, lucky me in my country one pack with 20 cigarettes is like 2 dollares

xNetworx 06-22-2010 10:27 AM

I still don't understand why cig companies dont sell single smokes for $1.50 each

Yeah, I quit last year for a while just to see how bad it would really be. I quit for 2-3 weeks, cold turkey. I thought maybe by Day 3 I'd be hallucinating or something, lol... but no. It was easy. I was shocked at how easy it was. After the 4th day, I came to the conclusion of, "What's all the fuss about?" So I'm doing it again, for good this time, starting tomorrow. I have just enough smokes to get through today and that's it. (One of the things that worked for me before.... never quit in the middle of the day. You need that first overnight jumpstart while you sleep.)

Miz_Wright 06-22-2010 10:40 AM

Gee, if only there was a way smokers could get their fix and be legal, without breaking the bank.

And if we could profit from it, that would be SO COOL.

... Oh, wait.

Tom_PM 06-22-2010 10:40 AM

I'm glad I was able to quit. It was already entirely too expensive.

I can remember when I was 13, I already smoked then.. The gas station near the house had a machine. 50 cents a pack. haha. 50 cents. Now it's 50 cents per cigarette!

Smokers: you should grow a few tobacco plants if you dont want to quit. Grow it, dry out the leaves, roll em up. puff puff.

Or just bite the bullet for once and for all and throw away your ashtrays.

There's plenty of reasons. Most of them are money-related.

Quitting is tough!

We were sending around $500 a month on smokes....so glad we gave it up. I will admit, it has taken a few tries to quit and we did fail a few times. This time we are on board for the long haul....just sick and tired of being sick and tired and we want to live a bit longer and save money too :thumbsup

Wow! good luck with that. It would seem that you have way more self control than others. That is a good thing.

I also hear that people that start exercise then quit have an easier time quitting.

With all of the money you will save, you will be able to buy a Juicer and a gym membership.lol/jk

nico-t 06-22-2010 11:18 AM

holy fuck i thought holland was bad, but that is crazy! Even here a pack of cigs is twice as cheap (about $5-6) and i already think that price is fucking rediculous...

It is incredibly hard -- though there are the lucky few (like my honey) who can pick it up and put it down without a problem. Then there are people - like me - who have to really work at it. Like NikkiLicks, I got tired of feeling like garbage every day. After 23 years of smoking, I reached my limit.

And I have to say - the extra $150 (I live in NC, so it's not QUITE as bad) a month isn't too shabby either ;)

BAKO 06-22-2010 11:23 AM

just wow

Amputate Your Head 06-22-2010 11:24 AM

I think the proper mindset is crucial when quitting cigarettes. Whatever mindset works best for you. For me, it was treating it from a strictly business point-of-view. It's something I've bought regularly for a long time, but now the expense is outweighing the pleasure benefit I get from it. So I cut it from the expense list like I'd cut a cable bill or phone bill and not think about it anymore.

Some things to remember:

It's just a decision. There's no sorcery involved.
Smoking is not an involuntary movement, it requires you to decide to smoke.
We all have a choice.
It takes 3 days for nicotine to flush out of your system.
You won't die from nicotine withdrawal.
Replacing cigarettes with other nicotine products is not quitting. It's substitution.

Same way I stopped buying a $60 bottle of tequila every day of the week. Expense outweighed the benefit.

:2 cents:

Londes 06-22-2010 11:25 AM

$2 per pack so far in ukraine :pimp
but im thinking to quit this stuff anyways

ProG 06-22-2010 11:27 AM

I have no problem with this. Fuck cigarettes.

MrBottomTooth 06-22-2010 11:39 AM

I still don't understand why people smoke them. Most worthless vice ever. I don't mind the smell of a cigar, but if I try to put one in my mouth it just makes me choke.

I just don't see why someone could look at a cigarette and say, I want to inhale that toxic smoke into my lungs, even though it won't get me wasted or even give me a buzz. if you like the smell of them or something, go buy some flavoured incense.

They do give you a buzz. Your first cigarette will buzz the hell out of you. But you get used to that buzz over time (tolerance), and you end up chasing it every 30 minutes for the rest of your life (addiction).

I think cigs are prolly more addictive than illegal drugs due to them being sold legally, everywhere in the world. You know they are always around!

marketsmart 06-22-2010 11:46 AM

Philip Morris has been buying large tracts of land in Humboldt County...

They are going into weed production when CA legalizes it....

I believe addiction is in the brain of the beholder. Not the substance. Some people are more susceptible to addictive behavior than others. Some substances have the potential for abuse by such people. I am one of such people. I have addictive tendencies. But that doesn't mean I have no control over it. :winkwink:

In 1982, I visited some friends in North Carolina, and bought a carton of Marlboro Red's in a supermarket for $4.95 or $4.99. I'm glad I quit.

If carton is 10 packs, just say the price of 10% carton :) Unless you get major discounts there in USA. In Europe carton or pack you pay the same per pack.

TurboAngel 06-22-2010 11:52 AM

The tax is crazy I should quit myself.

mineistaken 06-22-2010 11:57 AM

By the way anyone in UK - London smoking Marlboro, hit me up I can give you a contact of my buddy who sells carton @ 37GBP. Made in EU, no high quantities, but he takes few of them everytime he flies to cheaper countries :)

kristin 06-22-2010 11:57 AM

I remember about 8 years ago I went back home to NY for Christmas. I had a $5 bill on me and I went to get a pack of smokes, the lady goes "$5.11 please." I said, but I only got smokes, she said "right."

In Arizona at the time I was paying about $3 max.

The next year I brought a carton home from Arizona. =)

pornmasta 06-22-2010 11:58 AM

Time for tubes... cigarettes tubes!

IllTestYourGirls 06-22-2010 12:00 PM

Ill never understand you guys when you complain about high cig taxes but want to make pot legal so they can tax it. How much tax do you think they would put on pot? $20/$30 a pack?

Because killing people daily and locking people up in prison for plant particles is fucking barbaric?

The more I see the inflation on cigs the more I hope weed never gets legalized and taxed

I'm guessing any tax on marijuana would have a built in checks & balances because of the nature of the plant. It's so easy to grow just about anywhere by anyone, that buying it is really just a convenience. So taxes could never get as high as cigarettes, people would simply grow their own. Cigarette tobacco is not so easy to make. I think this is part of the reason it's still criminalized today... they can't figure out a way to completely milk the public on taxes with it yet because they can't control growth.

Smiley 06-22-2010 12:39 PM

just more bullshit...if ppl want to smoke, let them..if ppl want to eat shitty foods, let them

i hate being treated as a second class citizen because i want to smoke....to all nonsmokers that preach...fuck off...i dont come into your life and preach what i believe

now with that said....i quit cold turkey three weeks ago and will never bitch to a smoker, i will still defend smokers the right to smoke and i call bullshit on that nonsmokers make smokers leave a drink unattended to have to walk outside to smoke and cant at least bring your drink out with you while you smoke, but you have some 20yr old meathead thinking hes god that stops you at the door..or if a nonsmoker sits in the smoking section outside bitch because they are in a smokers area....guess what nonsmokers...you bitched and got us outside....if you want to hang in "our" area, deal with it...otherwise go back inside......you, the smoker are an adult...you are old enough to make a decision about your body..smoke away...

You fail to understand one very important thing - it cost money for all taxpayers to treat people from various diseases including the ones caused by cigarettes, bad food and so on.

PurrrsianPussyKat 06-22-2010 01:14 PM

I wish they cost $100 a pack. I can't stand all the smokers who pollute my air. It gives me a blinding sinus headache when I am around it.

What about all the various diseases I have to pay for (through taxes), in other people, that I will never get? Do I get to select which diseases I want my tax dollars to go toward treating?
