EFF Takes On Mass BitTorrent Lawsuits In Court Tomorrow

Quote:

As the US Copyright Group continues with its plans to force settlements from thousands of individuals who they claim illegally shared copyright movies using BitTorrent, opposition to their turn-piracy-into-profit scheme grows. Tomorrow the EFF steps up to the mark in a federal court to argue for the breaking up of the lawsuits. If successful they could strike a significant blow to this operation.

don't bet against the eff

there support brief was responsible for the reversal fo the timeshifting in a cloud arguement in favor of cable vision.

unlike the torrent site owners, they can't be unilaterly misrepresented as thieves.

Anti-piracy group here did the same thing, but now they go for the uploaders instead. And get piracy sites blocked. If you can target and stop the top uploaders and source it will have bigger effect than going for all the small fish.

1. law firm sues potential infringers in one big group
2. this reduces the cost per defendent
3. this makes the pay up or else scheme work even thought he evidence is shoddy at best
4. eff is trying to decouple the cases, so each person is accused on their own
5. allowing the different issues to be heard seperately (my wifi was hacked, wasn't me, was a bogus ip address falsely reported by the tracker, was a proxy spoof etc)
