Husbands can be jailed for insulting wives under new French law

Quote:

The law ? the first of its kind ? means that partners who make such insults or threats of physical violence faces up to three years in prison and a ?75,000 (£60,000) fine.

"How can you define what is 'a reiterated insult'?," said Virgine Duval, national secretary USM, France's biggest magistrates' union.

"This is just a poster law pushed through to please women's rights lobbies ? but it's inapplicable in practice and if anything will increase conflicts in families," she told The Daily Telegraph.

Another law made to please some lobbies and to create a useless debate. In the meantime, nobody asks the problems the society faces and the solutions brought to them, talking about the economic crisis where money flooded the banks but where people have to work until 67yo to get their pension to quote the last measure against the people.

DateDoc 06-30-2010 01:30 PM

so you just get your friend to do it for you ;)

Jarmusch 06-30-2010 01:33 PM

Yeah, as if prisons aren't already overcrowded with guys that actually killed their wives.

CDSmith 06-30-2010 01:39 PM

Why does it target only husbands I wonder. Women can be quite vicious with the mental abuse too, why not include ANYONE male or female?

"This is just a poster law pushed through to please women's rights lobbies – but it's inapplicable in practice and if anything will increase conflicts in families," she told The Daily Telegraph.

I agree with that statement in full.

No, It's not.

It follows a video campaign, backed by the French government, which showed a woman being pursued by the bullying voice of her husband, which mocks her as fat, useless and worse as she goes about her daily tasks.

The two legislators say a woman dies every 2.2 days in France because of domestic violence, which understood broadly affects 10 percent of women ages 18 to 60. Ms. Bousquet said that in couples, 90 percent of the victims were women.
