Looking to become a web designer

So I have been thinking about this alot and I have decided that I could probably teach myself web design for my own business and maybe a side gig if I can bring my skills to a marketable level

but of course I am a bit clueless on what a decent web designer needs to know to design websites, banners, and blog designs.

What software should I learn before I decide to put my work out there.

there lot of aspects, good grasp, understanding and manipulation of shapes, color and its combinations, textures and typography, feel of balance and eye for art- is a general basis without even getting technical. also need to know your tools and what they do - practice, practice, practice. Photoshop is great.
html/css is whole different animal

only way to teach your self is to do it, consistent determined practice can lead to great results. i know i'm not being too helpful, when i want to learn something i start pocking at it till i get it, thats the only way and read as much as possible on the subject, but actual practice is what counts most and makes you propel.

It seems like the private college in my city has the best course outline for web design, and they have the classroom set up on macs which i would also be getting first time experience using a mac, but the course is 1 year, plus I have to find my own internship and 18k

I figure the internship would be offering my design skills for a number of hours required for the course and have them submit a letter for my portfolio or something.

and the school knows I am taking the course for adult websites and my own personal adult biz.

because the community colleges aren't local to me and require a lot of commuting on the bus
