Apple blames faulty formula for iPhone 4 problems

In response to mounting reports that the iPhone 4 offers subpar call reception, Apple Inc. today said that an algorithm used in its new smartphone is flawed and promised to update its iOS 4 operating system in the next few weeks.

Users called the company's inaccurate algorithm explanation "hooey" and worse on Apple's support forum.

Apple blamed the faulty formula for problems users have encountered with the iPhone's signal strength, which has been said to quickly plummet when the phone is held in certain ways.

"We were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong," Apple said in a statement issued Friday morning. "Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays two more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display four bars when we should be displaying as few as two bars."

US to Apple: Yeah that's great and all but why doesn't the phone part work?

96ukssob 07-02-2010 12:31 PM

as an iPhone lover, I have to say I hate this phone. I can't even use it because of the shitty quality.

I got it the day it came out and since then I've dropped more calls then I can count. Was never this bad on the iPhone 3GS and the blue-tooth reception is pitiful at best. I have the jawbone headset that apple sells in their stores, but in order to get any decent reception and have the person hear you on the other end, you have to point the bottom of the phone at your face.

I'm disgusted with apple so much so that I would consider getting another phone

Was thinking the same thing..:thumbsup

seeandsee 07-02-2010 12:35 PM

this is even worse, so when you get 2 bars, its almost none working :D

Zayne E. 07-02-2010 12:40 PM

I made the mistake of downloading the new OS to my 3G. Fucking thing hardly works anymore...everything loads so damn slow.

"Get back in your goddamn cubicles and figure out a fucking way to show full signal strength no matter what!"

Semi-Retired-Dave 07-02-2010 12:54 PM

Now they will have everyone go out and buy another one. It's all a set up.

mynameisjim 07-02-2010 12:56 PM

I don't own any Apple products but I like the company. This bullshit spin is really beneath them though.

Adam X 07-02-2010 12:56 PM

yeah what a joke to prevent further legal issues/lawsuits..

plausible deniability

gizmodo has some good articles..

Apple knows they need to add a non-conducive layer of something to the exterior siding
but that would take new FCC approvals etc and they would have to replace all phones etc.. its a huge mistake for their team.. didn't see this comin at all.

gleem 07-02-2010 04:10 PM

I dunno I have the iphone4 and never had a dropped call, so far I'd have to describe the thing as "titty sweet".

But then all this shit about the bars, and I'm thinking I should send it back just in case they come out with a hardware fix in a couple months, which means that's what everyone else is thinking which is prolly why Apple stock has been tanking.

camgirlshide 07-02-2010 04:33 PM

it's called change the formula so they can blame at&t instead.

Of course I don't have one and have read several articles saying this phone is the same as all previous iphones as far as reception goes. It's just that they all sucked.

What I really hate is the class action lawsuits. If you don't like the phone don't buy it. If you already bought it and don't like it take it back. It is insane that we allow people to buy something, say they don't like it, but sue the company that made it istead of just sasking for a refund. I haven't seen apple say they wouldn't stand behind their product anywhere. This kind of legal activity is what scares away innovation in this country.

Their fix will do the opposite. They say the phone is showing too many bars not the other way around.

Bingo. I hope the average iPhone buyer sees through their shenanigans too. I was seriously shocked that they would actually respond this way...address a big problem by introducing a slightly lesser but completely different problem that implicates a different company instead...smoke and mirrors. AT&T didn't design your fucking phone to be prone to death grip!

dav3 07-02-2010 06:01 PM

It just works!

Nathan 07-02-2010 06:19 PM

Sad thing also is, that they say they will release the "fix" in a "couple weeks" ... seriously, the fix takes them 5 minutes to do in code, it will in no way take long to release if they wanted to... but, what will then happen?! Of course, when it does actually not fix issues, people would still be in the 30 day money back window... that they can not allow, so better stall all those first buyers for 30 days so they can not return the phone..

I am with you , since upgrading to iOS4 , my phone loads like a pissed off snail.

Joshua G 07-02-2010 07:13 PM

LOL that the algorithm was wrong. Its been wrong since the first iphone came out. My iphone 2.0 shows 4 bars, until the moment i actually try to make a call, then suddenly all the bars disappear & my call can't go through.

another aspect of this is the huge RUSH to get a product to market by a deadline to make management/investors happy. Instead of putting out a product that works right, they release a product full of bugs because they don't have enough time to fix the problems.

& pardon my naivete, but why does a phone maker place the antenna at the spot most people hold their phones?

Joshua G 07-02-2010 08:21 PM

I fail to see how fixing the fraudulent bar display is going to solve this problem:

I did too and you can downgrade back to 3.1.3 or backup your mail and contacts (unless you use gmail) and just do a restore to factory settings and then restore all your apps. Before you try make sure to uncheck sync whatever (apps, music, podcasts) first in itunes.

If ya lose stuff you don't want to it's because you didn't back something up, not my fault this advice comes with no guarantee :)

Take it back and wait 6 months when they'll eventually release a better version and probably more colors etc... https://gfy.com/showthread.php?t=976362 just did it myself! :thumbsup
