I-580 shootout suspect mad at left-wing politics - Jul 2010

(07-18) 17:59 PDT Oakland -- A 45-year-old parolee, described by his mother as angry at left-wing politicians, opened fire on California Highway Patrol officers on an Oakland freeway early Sunday and was hit by return fire while wearing body armor, authorities said.

Byron Williams of Groveland (Tuolumne County) was taken to the emergency room at Highland Hospital, where he was in stable condition. Police did not describe his injuries. Two officers suffered minor cuts from flying glass. Williams was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for shooting at the CHP officers and Oakland police said he may face other charges.

Three CHP vehicles had their windows shot out, but no officers were shot, police said. They said the driver was armed with a rifle and a shotgun as well as the handgun and fired at least two of the weapons during the shootout. Morgan said the driver was hit numerous times and survived only because he was wearing a bullet-resistant vest.

:2 cents: At least in this case the cops are justified. And amazingly, somehow this guy didn't end up dead. (Body armor helped with that I'm sure). But the freeway was closed all day yesterday... a freeway that on average, funnels 700,000+ vehicles per day.

I bought mine right after I got out of the military. Never know when you might need one. So, I guess I've had body armor since 1987.

Looks like top notch guy to me.

It won't stop a knife attack or a rifle shot, but it'll halt a .45 point blank. (along with some broken ribs most likely).

I remember buying that vest too. Down in Long Beach in '92 on my way north, for the very specific reason that I was going to be living & working in or near Oakland, California. (Private Security gig) And the logic still stands today. Lots of people die in Oaktown.

It's surprising to me that the police don't train for headshots, especially after that infamous LA bank job with the guys covered head-to-toe in military grade body armor.

That is still the best / craziest shootout I have ever seen. Those two guys were hardcore. Also interesting to note how the cops purposely let one of them bleed to death on the ground after the fight was over, instead of letting him get medical attention.

I think the cops were not 100% sure how many gunman were actually fighting and
had an obligation to keep the EMTs out of the area until they knew the area was
secure.

Letting the EMTs come in and then they get gunned down by a 3rd shooter would
have been a MASSIVE error.

I haven't watched the video for a while, but I seem to remember there already being EMT's on scene treating injured people, they just neglected to treat him for an hour or so.

Pretty sure there was controversy over that, possibly a lawsuit by his family or something.

That town was why I moved out of San Fran unreal violence and crime there and that was 6 years ago
