How pissed are you that Old Spice is better at marketing than adult programs?

They blew up the internet with very little effort. The same campaign would have turned a great, semi well known solo girl site (or even a webcam site) into a multi million dollar juggernaut overnight.

This industry was filled with innovators, now it's filled with people too hard headed or stupid to adapt to an ever changing internet.

Uh, no.

I'm not saying they should put the girls (or guys) in a towel with Old Spice sticking out of the side but it was a simple, easy to pull off campaign that would have led to millions of dollars in sales for this industry. Unfortunately, it seems that all of the creative motherfuckers left years ago.

Tell the truth, what's the last innovative thing you've seen from this industry?

Blogs - Years behind everyone else and still doing them wrong.

RSS - Years behind everyone else and still doing it wrong.

Tubes - Years behind YouTube and still doing it wrong.

How long has it been since you've seen anything marketed in anything resembling a creative or unique way? When is the last time you've seen a paysite offer a new tour / join page or a webcam site offer promotional material worth two shits?

Exactly, this industry needs a good tazering. :winkwink:

How many porn sites would pay the Old Spice actor the kind of money he's making
with Old Spice?

Answer : Fucking nobody!

We get what we pay for : Dumb motherfuckers with a big cock and a ugly face
with no personality.

Plus this "Gonzo style" shit bores me to tears.

How many fucking dicks and pussies can I look at with nothing else going on except
some high pitched screeching from some fugly whore.

Get real.

Copyright infringement is hurting but the product itself is not really anything worth
watching except for people who never have real sex.

The shit is fucking boring.

I have a pass word to all dogfart sites for more than a year and have watched
a total of maybe 5 videos.

If you saw one then you saw them all. Shit!

Today's porno plot template :

Chick walks in, smiles, starts fucking, cumshot, fade to black.

How many people have such a small brain to keep watching that shit day after day?

Fucking cartoon sites are getting more sign ups.

No, but out of the millions of people that watched the videos some will. The promotion was aimed at women, their sales and brand recognition will benefit.

While I agree that it was a brilliant campaign they do have something that the average solo girl doesn't have. They have a base of people who know them already because they have spent years, if not decades, and millions of dollars on advertising. Everyone knows what old spice is and just about everyone who watches TV has seen at least one of those crazy commmercials they do with that guy.

Most people don't know who the average solo girl is and wouldn't retweet her video to friends and splash it all over facebook unless it was really funny or very interesting in some way.

It could work with a solo girl, but I can't imagine it being nearly as big.

Most people didn't know Paris Hilton before her video 'leaked'.

Also, it isn't so important that they know the specific solo girl. These videos were popular because they targeted popular users of big social networking sites. The news reports of the advertising campaign threw it further into the sphere and now pretty much everyone has heard of it.

Not to mention I was comparing the creativity of the campaign, it doesn't have to be the same thing or even similar. Just something more than the crap that is being done today.

I agree completely that it is very creative and a cool way to think outside the box. They did target popular social media people, but part of the success of it is that those people responded. Would they respond the same to a solo girl? Maybe. Would Alyssa Milano make a video response to a solo girl? Maybe, but doubtfully.

You are correct that Paris Hilton was pretty much an unknown outside of LA and NY when her video hit. But most people in the country knew that name. When it was marketed that she was the hot heiress of the Hilton hotel chain, it stirs interest. The same can be said for Kim Kardashian. She was kind of known, but her name is familiar and that helped. It is interesting because they are both from very wealthy families that many people have heard of. It might have been a different story if Paris' parents worked regular jobs and she was a typical middle class girl.

Either way, these are all good ideas as far as interesting and effective ways to market something. It has been a while since adult has had any kind of out of the box style ideas like this.

You guys do realize there was an entire television campaign consisting of nearly
10 million dollars in airtime that came before the internet videos. They also hired Comedy Central's Tim and Eric to direct a few of the ads.

Not to mention they pay to be tops on youtube as well in the early part of the campaign.

I'd assume if a solo girl had an advertising budget of $10+ million and hired professionals to create commercials she could do pretty good.

Smokieflame 07-19-2010 06:12 PM

LOL next we are going to be comparing Reality Shows to porn... Old Spice has TV commercials that air on every channel all day and night long... They are mainstream product and have been around since our grandparents were young...

You guys are being extremely simple minded. Fuck their budget, many porn sites have exposure as well and there are dozens (hundreds?) of them with enough exposure to pull something similar to this off. Lightspeed tried it long ago with his "She's retiring, no she's not!" spill about Jordan Capri but it was half hearted.

For the record, I've toyed with creative stuff like this just for fun over the years with great results. Anything that makes it personal has a huge head start.

VHNet 07-19-2010 06:30 PM

No doubt there are lessons to be learned. People should definitely try to reverse engineer any successful campaign they come across. I think a direct comparison is stretching it a bit in this case though because of the television component.

But definitely a good case study.

As if budget doesn't mean anything.

Listen homeboy, you don't even have the budget to pay for the bandwidth of an
old spice level campaign. Meaning that you have to get the same number of ad views
they get through TV, Radio, Print Ads, Sponsorships and then the internet.

You have to get that many "ad views" through your web server alone because Nascar
ain't going to paint "Monsterniggacock.com" on their fucking car hoods.

Fatpigfuckfest.com is not going to have a "point of sale ad" in the grocery store!

Of course porn can complete with Procter & Gamble, it's only the 4th largest corporation in the world by market capitalization, that touches over 4 billion consumers lives daily and $57 billion a year company in fiscal year 2005.

Maybe it's because there's more money in deodorant than adult right now. :winkwink:

Actually, lately it's not been just deodorant, but many of those companies are crossing over into soaps etc. targeting men. Stuff people have to buy on a regular basis vs. porn which right now no one has to buy period. Until there's a free dispenser of deodorant on everyone's block, Old Spice isn't even close to being comparable to the situation in adult.

mynameisjim 07-19-2010 08:21 PM

Now, the real question is, did the campaign do a good job of reinventing the brand?

Only time will tell I suppose.

I do think the old Axe campaigns were better for overall sales.

A lot of people liked the Old Spice ads, but not sure if it really reinvented the brand.

What are your thoughts on that aspect of the campaign? Everyone already knew the brand "Old Spice" so the job was not just to get their name out there, the task at hand was to rebrand Old Spice. Did they do it?

There have been several good campaigns online in the mainstream. There's even a pretty shitty band that sells millions of dollars because of their catchy VIDEOS. You know, something producers here have had decades to tweak.

Anyhow, that's not the point. Many years ago EVERY good idea online originated from porn. Not so anymore.

Come on Amp, we all know that porn invented PHP, SQL, Flash, high speed download, and
the "window.open" command in javascript.
Of course porn invented search engine technology because we wanted to be
found. Google is just a cheap rip off of our original algorithms.

In 2004 Lensman gave Sleazy Dream admin or mod privileges for a day. He had already been sparring with me because I laughed at his attempts to come off as an innovator / smart guy in the business (site is still 1998 fabulous!) and he decided to edit my posts to say something completely different. I don't remember what it was 6 years later but I changed all of my locations to 'Fuck Sleazy' and left GFY. Someone hacked my account about 6 months later and I didn't get the password back until yesterday.

I don't hate the fucker, he's just not 1% of the intelligent playa he tried to come off as. I wouldn't punch him in his fat head if I saw him in public or anything. :winkwink:

:winkwink:

But, but, that's why you came back.....You're here to change all that...it's your density. I mean... your destiny.

Most webmasters' idea of marketing is to give content away for free.
