Hanoi, Vietnam (CNN) -- North Korea vowed Friday that there would be a "physical response" in reaction to the planned joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea. "There will be a physical response against the threat imposed by the United States militarily," North Korea spokesman Ri Tong Il told reporters outside the Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting. About 8,000 military personnel from the United States and South Korea are scheduled to participate in joint military exercises beginning this weekend.

Ri described the planned U.S.-South Korea joint military exercise as "another example of a hostile policy" against North Korea. "It is a grave threat to the Korean peninsula and also to the region of Asia as a whole," he said. He said the exercise was against North Korea's sovereignty and security.

The military exercise, dubbed "Invincible Spirit," is scheduled to run from July 25 to July 28. In addition to the 8,000 personnel involved, military officials say it will include 20 ships and submarines and about 200 aircraft. Gen. Han Min-koo, chairman of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in Tuesday's statement that the exercises will show the military's readiness and resolve. "We stand fully prepared to respond militarily to any further North Korean provocation," he said.

They are only there training because they know its about to go down. You don't send that many ships and troops in for an exercise. That is overkill.

You don't know much about military exercises do you, I've been in several, this is about what they always do in the Navy, remember an aircraft carrier has about 5500 for a crew and air command. My daughter in on the Ronald Reagan. There is probably one submarine and a carrier group by the sounds of the report, this is NORMAL in size for war games with another country, I did one with Japan, they did pretty good.

Yeah, but that's for private citizenry, not government. And we all know that consumerism is what our economy is founded on, hence... buy more crappy laptops to save the economy! (ignore the part about them coming from India.... just buy, buy, BUY! dammit!)

Yeah, that's about all North Korea is going to do too. Any hostile action on their part and the fucking warheads will start raining down upon them. I'd love to see NK throw a torpedo at one of our carriers. NK will cease to exist at that moment.

Depends whether you just point it at someone or poke them in the eye with it.

Sly 07-23-2010 09:35 AM

Why wouldn't they? They already know that they can play with nukes, launch missiles, sink South Korean subs, and starve their people with no repercussions. May as well have some fun and do some grandstanding.

I don't think so either but just for debate we do actually have probably 70k or even more
troops located close to the region already.

Troops located in :

Hawaii, Samoa, Guam, Japan(Okinawa) and South Korea.

Jack

If China takes their side, then the prophecy of 2012 will come true.

We have 1/10th of the nation unemployed... can anybody say "draft?"

This is our government's way of thinning the unemployed masses. One really big war.

Increase profits and emliminate Americans. Good deal for the government.

That's how things were done in previous centuries, including the last one, and when you think about it, it's a very efficient, albeit cruel, method of addressing labor pool imbalances.

Nonetheless, I highly doubt that that's what Obama has in mind here.

Since the truce was signed in 1953...I do not think that a year has gone by without North Korea making some kind of threat either to the U.S. or South Korea. I also think that a combined military exercise has been held almost every year...if not every year...since 1953.
