31-year-old Spanish man known only as Oscar is able to eat, speak

MADRID ? A Spanish man who underwent the world's first full face transplant appeared before TV cameras Monday for the first time since his surgery, thanking his doctors and the family of the donor. Identified only as Oscar, the 31-year-old spoke with considerable difficulty at a news conference at Vall d'Hebron hospital, where he was operated on in late March.

During the 24-hour surgery, doctors lifted an entire face, including jaw, nose, cheekbones, muscles, teeth and eyelids, and placed it masklike onto the man. He has been described as a farmer who was unable to breathe or eat on his own after accidentally shooting himself in the face five years ago. The head of the surgical team, Dr. Joan Pere Barret, said Monday the man will need between a year and 18 months of physical therapy and is expected to regain up to 90 percent of his facial functions.

Oscar, a man who underwent a full face transplant in April, poses for the photographers as he appears in public for the first time in a news conference at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, on Monday.

The news conference was called because the man was being released from the hospital and sent home. He is now able to drink liquids and eat soft foods, and has been able to speak for the past two months, the hospital said in a statement. The patient also has regained feeling in most of his face and is partly recovering movement of his muscles. One good sign was that a week after the operation, he had to be shaved because of beard growth.

But he also suffered acute rejection twice ? once four weeks after the surgery and again between the second and third months. Both times, the new face was saved with medication, the statement said.

:2 cents: Fuuuuuuuuck! :uhoh That's hardcore.

I'd rather stay faceless...

Ethersync 07-26-2010 08:48 AM

If that's the after I'd hate to see the before....

How in the hell did he accidentally shoot himself in the face? WTF...

scarlettcontent 07-26-2010 09:01 AM

poor guy, hope he regains his facial functions, he looks a bit dodgy at the moment

iSpyCams 07-26-2010 09:07 AM

I guess if there was a "before" pic we could decide if that's an improvement. I imagine it is, but it doesn't look that great compared to a normal person.

The only times i've seen anything that related to someone 'accidentally' shooting themselves in the face were where they had tried to commit suicide but were a bit incompetent and shot up from under their chin taking off most of their face and leaving their brain intact. I suppose it still counts as an accident. Messy.

poor guy, but I guess he must be pleased that he is on his way to a somewhat normal life.

Serial Pervert 07-26-2010 10:17 AM

really hardcore...

spazlabz 07-26-2010 10:23 AM

Wow, that is amazing that they are even able to think about doing a surgery that difficult. Impressive how far medical science has progressed. I am glad the guy got a new face and I am not trying to be funny here but I hope that surprised expression changes and he is able to control his new face after the therapy.

candyflip 07-26-2010 10:38 AM

It might now look perfect, but I'm sure this guy is happy as can be. It's an amazing procedure and I'm sure they'll only get better with more practice.

I have a good friend who's an orthopedic surgeon and some of the new technology they have access to let's them do things that he was told would never be possible.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought. A cover story for a botched suicide.

I could have swore this was the first, I remember seeing this a long time ago. She also had her face blown off with a shotgun. Maybe hers was just consider partial or something.

Looks like a typical adult webmaster to me, so good job.

Sly 07-26-2010 11:46 AM

I can't wait to see where medicine is with this type of surgery in 10 years.

I think some of you are forgetting that this man could not drink or eat before this. This is life-changing. Aesthetics do not matter.
