Glass advice [canon]

My ladyfriend has a 40D with kit lens that needs upgrading and has about 900 bucks to spend on a new bit of glass.

She already has a 50mm macro.

200mm telephoto is not neccessary.

Any recommendations?

$900.00 bucks? have her look on ebay for the best all around Canon 24-70mm 2.8L

New it is around 1300 USD but used anywhere from $700 to $1000 ebay and on CL

I was wondering about l series, as she is close to that.

24-70 sounds perfect.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will hit ebay.

agree, a lightly used L lens would be a safe bet

If you're willing to lose an f-stop, an alternative to the 24-70mm is the f4 24-105mm L lens, which also has image stabilization. With the IS you can probably hand-hold the camera at a slower shutter speed anyhow. B&H price is $1,050: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...4L_IS_USM.html

Interesting alternative. She doesn't shoot much indoors, so the f4 might work and I think she would prefer the extra length (don't they always)

With second hand glass is there any way of determining how much use it has had at all?

Well keep in mind, the longer the zoom the less sharp the lens becomes through out the entire zoom range.

As a canon shooter I know this first hand.
The 24 -70mm 2.8L is far superior to the 24-105, I have both lenses.
I rarely use the 24-105L
