The primary ointments I use are Dovonex and Ultravate, when I bother using ointments. Personally, I don't like to use them since they are messy, and I have a general dislike of drugs.
I use T/Gel shampoo periodically for my scalp, although one thing to be aware of is that the primary active ingredient is Coal Tar, so I don't recommend it for everyday use.
It's too bad about your BF - I guess that I am fortunate since my Psoriasis doesn't itch. I've heard that some medicines reduce itchiness or the urge to scratch, although they do not effect the Psoriasis itself.
There are several websites dedicated to Psoriasis treatment (since there is no cure - yet). I suggest that you start there, and also consult a dermatologist/specialist.
Some of my friends have suggested that a restricted diet has helped them, although several of the foods that are on the taboo list are among my favorites. That figures... :Oh crap
Good luck to you and your BF,
ADG
