I have an ear infection, what should I do?

I hate going to doctors, but I think I have to bite the bullet now.

My left ear hurts, its swollen and I can't clench my teeth anymore. I've tried to ride the storm out and take antihistamines, but it doesn't appear to be working.

Any suggestions from the GFY doctors?

Ethersync 07-30-2010 11:25 AM

Go to the doctor.

Bryan G 07-30-2010 11:26 AM

go to the doctor, seriously Ive had alot of ear infections as a kid growing up. Go to the Dr

Deej 07-30-2010 11:27 AM

Well its at the point of Dr. now...

but before that hit, you should have tried a lavage and some antibiotics.

Sharky 07-30-2010 11:28 AM

Sound advice on GFY? Where are the guys telling me to put garlic juice in my ear then lick the underside of a flying cockroach?

Jayvis 07-30-2010 11:29 AM

I think rubbing alcohol helps...? Just a small dab on a swab?

pornmasta 07-30-2010 11:31 AM

Antihistamines are good against ALLERGIES

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otitis_...s_and_symptoms

If you have REALLY nothing else use a diluted solution of oxygenated water (10 volume water is too concentrated) don't put something that you can't remove.
Don't use alcohol.

I saw the thread 10 minutes too late :(

Seriously though just go to the doctor there's a lot of stuff in your head you don't want getting infected.

Sharky 07-30-2010 11:36 AM

I used to get swimmers ear a lot when i was a lifeguard. I had drops i would put in my ear to dry everything up. This is the first time I've had it in a while... ugh the pain! lol

Garlic juice? are you crazy? The proper remedy is to have your neighbor piss in your ear. This will kill whatever infection you have.

There's the real advice you were looking for. haha

DamnGoodRatio 07-30-2010 11:47 AM

Take a very large sledge hammer and smash your left hand with it until you can't stand it anymore; hey it may not cure you but you will forget about the ear pain . . .

RyuLion 07-30-2010 11:55 AM

My mom, used to put a cotton wet with alcohol and leave it in my ear all day..
When we were little kids..

_Richard_ 07-30-2010 12:03 PM

go to the doctor for antibiotics, and stop using qtips lol

CIVMatt 07-30-2010 12:05 PM

Yeah get down to a Centracare at least, that can go from bad to nightmare quickly

Sharky 07-30-2010 01:07 PM

Yeah, so now I've got some antibiotics, a z-pack I guess. along with some ear drops for pain. Hopefully I will be good to go come time to head south for the AVN show next week

scarlettcontent 07-30-2010 01:12 PM

notime 07-30-2010 01:19 PM

Ive had ear infections a couple times.

Cause: You are not getting your ears thoroughly dried after showers or dips in water. A huge amount of bacteria have taken residence. The yellow discharge is the body undergoing a battle to kill them.

Treatment: You have to keep the inner ear dry constantly. (no new water in there) If it continues to get wet, you will not get rid of it.

Once dry it will go away within weeks. If allowed to get wet it will take months.

After 2 of these that went months I finally figured it out. Best bet is to dab your ears out with T-paper every time you get out of water or the shower.

The inner ear can get wet 999 times without a prob but the 1000 time you get the ear infection and indeed they are hard to get rid of. Mainly because most people unknowingly cont to allow water in the ear.

Good luck. :)

I'll have my secretary send you the bill. :) j/k

See an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

It depends a bit on the type and location of the infection.

If you have an infection of the outer ear, causing by liquid trapped behind earwax in the outer ear canal, you can often fix it yourself.

Once home remedy that can work is using an eye dropper to drop warmed hydrogen peroxide into the ear.

Warm the hydrogen peroxide to about 130f - letting a small bottle of it sit in hot tap water for 5 minutes is about right.

You can also buy a small plastic tool that can be stuck in the ear to remove ear wax buildup. This works best when used when you first start feeling pain, as a preventive measure.

You can buy lavage kits that contain little bottles of a stroner peroxide solution, and a little lavage bulb called an ear syringe, but in my experience a dropper with warmed hydrogen peroxide works better (it's milder) and is less irritating.

Doctors will often use various tools to clean out the ear, sometimes a suction tool, sometimes just a probe similar to the plastic thing you can buy at the drugstore.

You don't even have to go to the doctors...go to one of those minute clinics in CVS and Walgreens and they'll hook you up with what you need.

Put garlic juice in your ear then lick the underside of a flying cockroach!

Or just go to the doctor :)

bdjerk 07-30-2010 03:33 PM

ear cones. seriously. they work.

Pics Traffic 07-30-2010 03:36 PM

What ever you do, don't go to the doctor. Use good old grandma's urine method. 5 drops in each eye and your ear is fine.

HomerSimpson 07-30-2010 05:58 PM

drink more to ease the pains... :)

Monique Niccole 07-30-2010 06:06 PM

When I was little, my mom would put sweet oil in my ear for an infection. But yours seems like it's past that point, so go with the antibiotics.

2MuchMark 07-30-2010 07:17 PM

No more aural sex for you.

CheeseHead Nacho Burger 07-30-2010 07:23 PM

I had an ear infection last week. Lots of swimming led to water I couldn't seem to get out. I didn't go to the dr. Instead I mixed rubbing alcohol and vinegard together and dumped it in my ear three times a day, let it sit for 5 minutes, dumped it out, dumped in some hydrogen peroxide, let it sit 5 minutes, dumped it out, then followed the peroxide with the alcohol/vinegar routine again.

It worked.

My grandmother had a problem with her ear decades ago and the doctor she went to was a notorious drunk. He poured a bunch of rubbing alcohol in her ear and she has had severe hearing damage ever since. Now that she is approaching her 80's she is almost totally deaf.

That is her story anyway, so I would exercise caution before dumping alcohol in your ears.

Take 2 hookers and call me in the morning. Trust me, you will feel better.

Rochard 07-31-2010 07:51 AM

Go to the doctor.

A few years ago my wife suddenly passed out while making breakfast. I mean, she just passed out cold, knocking her head down in the process. When it happened a second time we rushed her to the ER. Turns out it was because of ear wax clogging up her ears and throwing off her balance. And it got a lot worse before it got better.

Why did she never clean out her ears? lol

bbobby86 07-31-2010 08:15 AM

do not swim...

The Heron 07-31-2010 11:29 AM

You people are stupid. Pouring stuff into your ear is not going to help and will most likely make it much worse. If your body can't fight off an ear infection in 7-10 days you need antibiotics, it's that simple.

Yes now, but he should dry his ears after swimming.
