Playboy blames tubes!

Quote:

Digital revenues decreased $0.7 million, or 8%, compared to the prior year quarter and $1.7 million, or 9%, compared to the prior year six-month period largely due to a decrease in paysites revenues and lower royalties from various international licensees that distribute our content on the mobile platform. These decreases were primarily due to increasing amounts of competing free content available on the Internet. We continue our focus on efforts to increase profitability of our paysites by building traffic and conversions and improving the customer and advertiser experience and our competitive position. The current year quarter and six-month period were also impacted by lower e-commerce revenues.

Another tidbit:

Quote:

Eleven shareholder class action complaints have been filed against Playboy and certain officers and directors thereof in connection with Hugh M. Hefner?s July 8, 2010 proposal to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Class A common stock and Class B common stock not currently owned by Mr. Hefner for $5.50 per share in cash.

I tube the blame as well...

cambaby 08-07-2010 11:27 AM

Yes because content theft has destroyed the music industry as well.

Give me a fucking break, you people are near dead because you failed to innovate, you got complacent with your money and played consumers for fools, in the end you are the fools.

I see it as greed.

Had companies properly protected their content then things would not be this bad. Instead, companies decided NOT to protect their content when customers complained about it. Rather than risk loosing X percent of customers short term, they opted to lose XX percent long term simply by focusing on the present rather than looking towards the future.

apple saved the music industry... people no longer have to pay $14 to get the 1 or 2 songs they like.. also, concert money is huge these days..

your second statement is spot on.. i have never seen an industry destroy itself within like adult has.. the motto of the industry should be "if you cant beat em, join em before you even try to beat em"...

"hey look at this guy giving away free pictures... i should do that too..."

etc.. etc .. etc....

Tours and record sales.

Apples and oranges.

ottopottomouse 08-07-2010 11:52 AM

Naughty America doesn't seem to have died yet and all their content seems to be spread about within 30 seconds of being on the sites.

DWB 08-07-2010 12:03 PM

This industry has always destroyed itself from the inside. Nothing is new. This is because most of the people in porn have no idea how to run a business. The DVD side is just as bad, the only difference is they are not yet giving away their DVDs for free. Not yet anyway but any time now I'm expecting to see that as well.

This is what happens when a bunch of idiots with zero business experience run an industry. Those who do know how to run a business will survive. Those who don't are dying or are already dead.

We have given away the only thing we have to sell and we've given it away in such a large number that we will never be able to pull it back in. What we didn't give away for free, we've had stolen and someone else gave it away for free, and we supported it.

Simply amazing.

Maybe we could all earn millions if we went on tour too?

No wait...first off live sex shows are illegal in most places here in the U.S.
And secondly people jerk off to porn in private when there is nobody else around.

Damn.

Is there nothing we can do? Nothing?

We can't sell stuff that's already free. We've already sold all the adult toys, cam sites, and dating that we could. Ain't got no traffic anymore cause it's all over at pornhub so we can't sell that. And now it looks like we can't go on tour either.

Hmmmm....maybe that whole idea of PROTECTING the content in the members area wasn't such a bad idea. If only, if only I had thought to do that with my own paysite... :)

This industry should have moved HARD into DRM back when it was first introduced and never looked back.

But no, everyone was afraid. Well, look at the industry now. I bet the fear of losing some members is a lot less than the fear of having to find a new line of work. :2 cents:

I assume you are insinuating that you use DRM or something to protect the CM content. Doesn't work - I see that stuff all over the RS/HF/SM sites all the time.

There's a lot of challenges but there's also a lot of opportunities. Maybe the end of the "low hanging fruit" will lead to innovations that show the way to a more sustainable and consumer-centric future. Just my 2 c

Good for you. I'm not insinuating ANYTHING. I'm telling you flat out that you can't download our high quality stream. Period.

I really shouldn't have to explain this on GFY for the thousandth time...but what the hell. :)

Our high quality HD streams are scripted and protected in multi-layers. I've used EVERY known software out there. None of them can find the video, much less download it.

So the only things you are claiming to see that are OUR vids (not scenes that CM shot for Naughty America or other companies...those ARE everywhere) are either older vids from 2 years ago before we started protecting our content OR the small resolution low bit rate version that I GIVE our members to download.

And then as soon as we find those older vids and/or the small resolution new ones anywhere...Remove Your Content goes and gets them yanked down.

So nice try at being negative brother. But you're totally ignorant of what I've been doing the last 2 years and the sales AND rebills that have resulted from it.

Next time do some better research before commenting to someone like me. Save your b.s. for the ignorant.

You need real skills to innovate. The consumer was always last on our list of priorities.

They might of lost an affiliate or two by going DRM. :1orglaugh

So give memberships for $3 -$5. But everyone will tell you that price is an indication of quality. Which is why 90 of sites are around the $30 mark. Whether they're crap or GREAT. :1orglaugh

With experts like we have how did we get it so wrong. :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

Yes with all those people who know so much about how the Adult Net works it's amazing we are in a decline. We listened to them, followed their advice and still do the same. It's amazing that some of those experts are now gone and flipping burgers.

Knowing how to run a business is just part of it. You also need to know about how the product works, why and what consumers will buy and how the industry works. Many people on the Adult Net knew how to program and drive traffic.

Also customer needs was put low the list of requirements. I remember making a suggestion we should open our shows to customers on certain days. I was ridiculed. The last thing people wanted to do was meet customers. It's better to sit round a pool sipping iced drinks and chatting to ourselves than meet the only person who matters in a business built around selling the CUSTOMERS. Until the customer starts to wander away.

The writing has been on the wall for years. So point me to sites or sponsors doing anything really different today? :Oh crap :Oh crap

TheDoc 08-08-2010 05:19 AM

Was it free porn hitting PB back in the 90's or did they just change the word to 'the Internet' back then?

Almost everyone with a paysite/program is waiting for the paysite/program to do the selling for them. That's the "only" problem this Industry has - period!

A paysite doesn't need to be that unique, have drm, not give out porn or really anything special at all, it ONLY needs to update with decent porn....and actually have someone sell it rather than waiting for people to buy it.

Two kinds of people in this thread.... those that 'go get others' to promote them and those that bitch that nobody is promoting them, sales suck, etc. You don't need to innovate, create a new niche or really be anything special - update the damn site and go get people to promote it/buy it - end of story!
