Are you in favor of or against same-sex marriage?

Supporters of gay rights are still celebrating a federal judge's ruling last week in California that struck down the state's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage as a violation of the U.S. Constitution.

The decision was a major victory in a case that both sides say is sure to wind up before the U.S. Supreme Court and could result in a landmark decision on whether people everywhere in the United States should be allowed to marry people of the same-sex.

Same-sex marriage is currently legal in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia, while civil unions are permitted in New Jersey.

Last week, Mexico's Supreme Court, on an 8-2 vote, upheld the constitutionality of a Mexico City law that took effect in March.

Worldwide, 10 countries have legalized same-sex marriage - most recently Argentina at the end of July.

Many other countries have approved civil unions and registered partnerships and still others are debating a legal status for gay people.

Supporters of gay marriage believe it is a universal human rights issue and gay and lesbian couples should be entitled to the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Some opponents argue that the institution of marriage is a religious one and, as such, should exclude same-sex partnerships.

Other opponents argue against gay marriage on the basis of tradition or concerns about parenting.

Despite the growing number of countries, predominantly in the west, that allow same-sex marriage or recognize civil unions, homosexual behavior is still illegal in countries like Pakistan, Nigeria, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. (CNN)

isn't sodomy a homosexual behavior, and wouldn't the US be added to that list?

"supporters of gay rights"

Would people be more animated about it if it said:

"supporters of womens rights" ?

how about

"supporters of rights" ?

It's about simple human rights, for individual citizens. The article also stubs it's toe talking about gay couples wanting to be entitled to the same rights as heterosexual couples. This is fundamentally flawed speech since people dont attain rights by marriage. They attain them by being born. They want to have nothing but the SAME rights as anyone else. Period. Makes it pretty gd simple doesn't it?

charlie g 08-09-2010 08:25 AM

I am against gay getting married..... straight people too. If you want to fuck up a relationship the best thing to do is get married.

Yup. Agreed. Now only if liberals would think the same thing about health care. Seems the left and right only care about individual rights when it suits them....

Pretty much.

If two people wish to be able to share the benefits of living together in a silent "Oh god I don't want to die alone" pact, I'm fine with that.

Kiopa_Matt 08-09-2010 08:53 AM

Nope, no problems with it. The US is just behind the times right now, thanks to the rednecks. If you look at history though, gay marriage will be fully accepted throughout the US shortly. Give it a decade or so, and someone looking down on a gay couple will be the same as them looking down on a black person nowadays. Totally shunned.

cwd 08-09-2010 08:59 AM

marriage for all.

Amputate Your Head 08-09-2010 09:01 AM

Here' a better question....

Are the gay couples that are already married allowed to divorce? Or will that ruin the word "divorce" for the right-wingnuts too? :helpme

Yea, it's the rednecks that are stopping same sex marriages. I guess the majority of this country is occupied by rednecks. I would go with stupid people such as yourself but that would be too obvious. Also, LOL@comparing a black person to a same sex couple. I have no doubt it will one day be accepted by the majority, just not anytime soon. And I guess by your logic, the entire world is "behind the times", since the majority of countries don't recognize same sex marriages. Back to the drawing board for you.

the ending of a marriage or a civil union can both be called a divorce, or they can call it a dissolution

Tarnishing doesn't justify how I feel about it, how I feel about it is that it changes the meaning of the word Marriage, if they change that, I'm ok with that, but to force it thru the courts does little to sway my opinion.

Social acceptance thru judicial force, yeah, love that.

You guys can go on and on about the Bible, about interracial marriage, about civil rights or about anything you want
To me, it's just a bunch of people using the courts to hijack a title when a civil union with the same benefits of a marriage would make everyone happy. 7 million people voted to keep that title the way it is, they voted twice and one gay judge throws it out?

Just waiting for some asshole to call me a homophobe, because thats all they can articulate

You're right. Getting married is stupid. I would prefer to spend my life being single, banging random chicks until I'm 80, and working in the porn industry! It's like being a little kid and not having to grow up!

Well, as I see it 50% of all marriages end in divorce, therefore.... "Marriage" lost it's lofty position a long time ago. It's a little late now to be trying to spare "the meaning" or "the sanctity" of Marriage. Heteros fucked that up good all on our own. No gays required.

Because it is legal does not make it acceptable.

It boils down to are you or are you not for individual liberty?

unfortunately the word marriage has 'religious' connotations that can't be put aside, if you think about it. the homos are shoving their life style down the throat of the right wing bible thumpers... i don't believe they have the right to confront others with their lifestyle any more than I think nut jobs have the right to throw blood on people wearing fur or killing abortion doctors

Lawyers made it easy to divorce, now they look at this as added income for gay divorce.

so like William Shakespeare said, kill all the lawyers

I don't believe in any sanctity in marriage anymore, but that's me, I do believe that the people that are married, they have a say in it's meaning and weather a group of people can change the meaning of that word or title. It's just about the gay community beating up the straights for the sake of a title

like house wives being called domestic engineers
When I built elevators, we called ourselves vertical transportation engineers
As a bartender, I was a Master Mixologist
A waitress is now a server
An Airline stewardess is a flight attendant

Yet the guy that serves you coffee for $3 a cup is a Barista

Some people want to change the title to fit them, others, more of them, want it to keep it the way it is

topnotch, standup guy 08-09-2010 04:39 PM

If the the pillow-biters want to abuse each other's colons, so be it.

But calling that sort of nonsense a marriage is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

The whole issue isn't exactly worth losing any sleep over though.

Is there such a thing as a civil union with same benefits? there isn't
Why shouldn't gays have the same rights, regardless of the stupid title associated with it?
Why shouldn't they be allowed hospital visits and death benefits?

Hell, even my fiancee and I'd rather our union be called a civil union rather than marriage....but regardless of what we call it, we will still receive benefits from that our gay friends would not...

That's mighty bigoted of you. lol

But I suppose that if you were a lesbian (we'll keep this about women so as not to offend your delicate sensibilities) and the girl you have lived with and loved for 20 years and shared a home with...suddenly became very ill. Or was in a horrible car accident. And had to be put in the hospital and was near death...
And then you came to see the love of your life and was told you CAN'T because you aren't "family"

Well while the person you have shared your life lies in a room that you aren't allowed to go into and dies...you might be a little bit pissed about that.

then that needs to be changed, not the title, if the gay community is truthful in why they want this, for equal rights, then having a civil union with the same rights as a marriage would be agreeable to them. And I'm all for them having those rights, but what about the rights of the 7 million voters that don't want to change the meaning of the title?

They want the title, not the rights and until I see that they would be happy with the rights, I will not be convinced otherwise

The amount of effort they've launched in "defending their title" is just idiotic.

It's just another fucking label in a long list of labels. Anyone that gets attached to a label or is using one to define themselves or justify their self-worth (reason for living), then they've got much deeper problems than a couple of gay people getting "married".

Keep your labels. I reject them.

I'll chalk this up to you not hanging out with any gay people...I'm friends with some very outspoken gay rights advocates and that is exactly what many of them are doing...wanting the rights...the reason they have to use that title is there is not other title available for that...

I love how a lot of right wingers (not you specifically, but many) want the government out of their lives, but want it in the lives of gay people....they complain about gays ramming their views down there throats, but why is it ok for heteros to ram their lifestyle down the throats of gays? For the record, I don't care if you answer this question or not, it's not directed right at you, but rather a rhetorical question...

Spunky 08-09-2010 05:11 PM
