How do you handle awful visits to a hotel.

I currently was in Baltimore for the weekend. The hotel could not give me a working key, they had to let me in my room every time I wanted to get in. Plus the bathroom was dripping filth from the ceiling, hair and other garbage littered the restroom, How do you deal with an awful hotel experience,
Complain? Or what I am trying to see if i should let it die, or argue....

IllTestYourGirls 08-09-2010 10:55 AM

Complain, they should have no problem fixing it and/or giving you a credit.

If they don't do anything, take pictures and send them to their corporate headquarters, I bet they will give you a free stay.

Tom_PM 08-09-2010 10:57 AM

Go tell city hall that they need to get WAY more bribe money from that filthy hotel down the street. Or get a building inspector to go check it out.

Paul Markham 08-09-2010 11:12 AM

Complain firstly to the manager. If that does not work the other two replies have covered it.

The Heron 08-09-2010 11:45 AM

Is it a chain? Seems writing a twitter post gets faster responses sometimes...
I was just in baltimore, the Reniassance Harborplace is nice even got a free upgrade but damn that city seems overpriced.

MaDalton 08-09-2010 11:49 AM

demand a clean room - otherwise money back

Juicy D. Links 08-09-2010 11:51 AM

Phoenix 08-09-2010 11:56 AM

i wouldnt stay there...id just deman my money back and go to a better hotel

SykkBoy 08-09-2010 12:06 PM

take pictures, then talk to a manager. They will often upgrade you/give you a credit. Is the hotel nice other than your room? If so, then complain to the manager and keep it professional, but don't be a pussy about it either. If the hotel is an overall dump, an upgrade isn't like to be any real improvement.

If you don't get the response you want, there are review sites of all kinds. Hit them and write the review and include the pics if you can. If they are a chain, send an email to corporate with the pictures and links to the site reviews.

docputer 08-09-2010 12:09 PM

If it is a mom and pop, it is likely complaining will do nothing. If it is a chain, if talking to a manager does no good, then call corporate.
Hit some travel websites that ask you to review your stay and ding the hell out of them if they don't make it right.

Were you downtown or at one of the drug ridden rent by the hour hooker havens on Route 40?

I wouldn't have stayed.

But you never said if it was really a $10 room.

E.Banks 08-09-2010 12:29 PM

It was a decent room in a Ramada, nothing special, just an average room, I was in a hurry and had to book site unseen via orbitz on my phone. The hotel looked nice from the outside. nothing grand, but it was never meant to be, was around 100 and some change a night.

And I did take pictures, and So far I have got no where with corporate, hung up on once, and have been passed around on hold for a while.

ottopottomouse 08-09-2010 12:38 PM

Think I would have had a strop then.

Take it up with the manager and say you'll take it further with Ramada if you aren't happy. They are all franchises and won't want the trouble that comes with rooms like pigstyes.

:thumbsup Exactly. Especially when paying $100 for a night.

I leave and go to a proper hotel with a rate around $600 a night where I KNOW I'm going to get kick ass everything. :2 cents:

comeplay 08-09-2010 01:02 PM

next time use yelp to find one with good reviews or raise hell in the lobby if your room sucks balls

The wife and I are admitted "hotel snobs". We've left hotels that were being comped to us to go to better hotels at our own expense. Life's too short to stay in seedy shit holes, I say. We prefer resorts, or as close to "resort" as we can get. :)

I've been there and my solution was, after checking everything after I went into
the room, I immediately asked for my money back.

Of course I ended up sleeping in my car but at least it was free. :1orglaugh

No shit.

Now, if I think the place may suck, I ask to see the room before I pay.
If they don't show it to me then fuck them.

I only do this in really big cities because it doesn't seem like a problem in the smaller
towns with smaller hotels.

Ramada is normally a decent mid-level hotel chain.
Keep raising hell...hit Twitter, facebook, etc,. and every travel site you can find that has reviews. Post pictures of your shitty room.

candyflip 08-09-2010 05:46 PM

I complain to the manager. My last trip to Disney they decided to paint the railings outside of our room the first two mornings we were there.

I brought this up to the manager and not only did they move us to a new, much bigger room for the next 7 night we were there, but they also comped back the first three nights of rooms/tickets/meals...at the 3 night rate which pretty much paid back the entire trip.

If you can manage to be nice about it, it does pay to voice your dissatisfaction.

don't forget to flame tripadvisor and other review sites - people need to know about those experiences... hotel management have to learn the hard way to keep things clean
