Do you own a rescue dog? Important read.

What breed of dog would you guess Buddy to be?

His mom.

I had a DNA test done on him, and the results surprised the heck out of me. I recommend reading the story. It could save your dog's life.

pretty surprising results.

Every week, several people ask, "is he border collie?" I know they are going to think I am being sarcastic when I tell them what he really is.

I have an 8-9 month old Husky that I'm relatively certain is not a pure bred - he's a mut like me :thumbsup

CaptainHowdy 08-19-2010 04:41 PM

The only thing I despise about dogs are their barking and moaning...

A trained dog typed this message. This is almost impossible.

candyflip 08-19-2010 06:24 PM

My guess is Retriever and Shepherd.

The mom has the face of a small Lab. And the siblings look like Shepherds.

L-Pink 08-19-2010 06:29 PM

I know two things for sure, I would have lost a lot of money betting he was related to any dogs in the photos ..... and you have a fine looking and lucky pooch.

.

candyflip 08-19-2010 06:36 PM

I was pretty close.

munki 08-19-2010 08:27 PM

Wow that's a trip... he's a dead ringer for border collie with those markings. Our pup Gigi is Australian Shepard and Retriever cross... our other pup Lucca is Chow/Border Collie... Buddy looks very similar to our Collie, but would be more closely related to Gigi, trip the fuck out.

lazycash 08-19-2010 09:51 PM

Nice mix, friendly and smart.

Peaches 08-19-2010 10:18 PM

Just an FYI - not all "rescue dogs" are mutts. Mine happen to be pugs ;)

k0nr4d 08-19-2010 10:32 PM

I would never get another rescue animal. I got a cat from there once, worst behaved little bastard. Pissed all over everything all the time. Sure, they may be in there because they got lost or whatever, but there is a good chance they were given to a shelter by previous owner due to behavioral problems...

I actually rescued Buddy from Indiana.

Theo 08-19-2010 10:52 PM

looks like a mix of Golden Retriever and Australian Shepherd

Those DNA tests are horseshit. My parents vet was evaluating the accuracy of the tests before she tried selling them to customers. She offered a free test to my parents who had a pure bred springer spaniel.

The DNA test report showed something completely off the wall. It couldn't have been any less accurate.

Must have been a lucky guess.

+1

I had a rescue dog that turned out to be terrified of men and frightened of other dogs. Never know what's happened to them in the past and I wouldn't have anything but a brand new puppy now because of that.

We do a lot of work with a local animal rescue. There's always a foster animal of some sort in our home.

At the moment, it's a shithead cat who has made the spot under my basement stairs his favorite spot to take a shit.

american pervert 08-20-2010 08:12 AM

looks like a border collie/ german shepard mix

All my dogs are rescues and they all came with different levels emotional baggage. But you give them a constant home with love and it starts to change. CJ(the dog in my avatar RIP) when we got him, he was covered is rashes and welts he was basically left in a cage and treated like a piece of shit. When we got him he didnt want to be touched at all and before he died he loved sitting my lap and would want to do it all time. He became a very affectionate dog.

I bought a pure bred ten years ago and I think they duped me because he is psycho and neurotic and I should have adopted a shelter dog. :1orglaugh

watch out for shady breeders! there are more shady breeders out there than crazy pound pups. :2 cents:

TurboAngel 08-20-2010 09:12 AM

I watched as my dog was tossed out of a car, mad me fucking sick. I came home with her and fell in love. She has 6 toes on both her back legs and I have thought about getting a DNA test but haven't yet.

Lots of purebreds are psycho as pups.

my friend lives on a deadend st, he is a big doglover. some many people just dumped dogs on this street ,threw them out of cars. he is running a rescue now out of his house. Its so sad ,whats a matter with people.

SykkBoy 08-20-2010 11:43 AM

I would have guessed border collie too

All of our animals are rescue animals: 3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 hamsters, (one with no hands, they were chewed off by her mother when she was 3 days old), 3 rats and a snake.

Rescue animals take a LOT of patience and love. They aren't for everyone. all come with emotional baggage and others come with a lot of health problems like diabetes. 2 of our dogs were grossly malnourished and just skin and bones when rescued, but are now healthy happy dogs (mentally and physically). They still have their quirks though and we can never know exactly what happened to them in the past. One still doesn't like here butt touched at all and the other won't walk anywhere near a manhole cover or sewer grate when out for a walk. She'll freak out when going near them.

Our newest rescue dog is extremely timid and we're still working with him. When we first got him, he wasn't leash broken and would yelp like he was being beaten when we tried to provide basic grooming to him. In the 3 months we've had him, he's progressed to being leash broken and we can trim his nails and suppress his anal glands without him freaking out.

I'm eyeing a nice rural-type property here in Vegas so we can rescue and adopt more animals.

I know. I think he happened to stumble into the barn shortly after the birth of the others and made himself at home. He certainly doesn't look related.

Elli 08-20-2010 01:56 PM

Fascinating results, baddog! I would have guessed shepherd/hound cross with the mom looking more houndish and the siblings more shepherdy.

That is the thing. The mom [supposedly] is a greyhound/Weimaraner mix. Dad's genes were obviously the dominant ones.
