Camera help needed please

So I went to the beach today to shoot some offshore powerboat racing. I was using a Canon 40D and a 4GB card.

I got some killer shots, so I thought, and took the card down to about 15 shots before I left. Everything seemed normal.

I get home and pop the card in the reader to view on my mac and only half the pictures show up :(

I see that the last picture to show up is #9999

So I'm guessing it has to reset or something. I didn't see any message and it kept taking pictures as opposed to locking up and getting an error message and it kept counting down the pictures.

I'm bummed because the best shots are missing ( race shots ) so I'm wondering what happened and if there is a way to recover the shots.

sandisk I think gives away a program to help you get them back

So you think the rest of the images made it to the card but can't be accessed until they get reset.

Did you look to see if a new folder was created on the card? That frequently happens when you get to #*999

Lot of fake sandish cards out there. Have you used it before and it work fine?

Ok, no tsure if it is the same thing or not, but once you CUT those images over to your computer, then take the card out, put it back in, the other folder should show up!
I can't remember if I had to put it in the camera again or not.
The very first time it happened, I could still see the photos on the camera, so I used the cord from the camera to the computer. This was years ago, Hope this helps!
If this wasn't clear you can call me!

If only it were that simple.

Wait, it was :thumbsup

I'm tired and sunburned from a long day and popped the card in and clicked that folder 100
like I was on autopilot and when I had the problem I googled it and got some remarks about error messages
and reformatting the card and losing the images and so on.

I was hoping someone here at GFY would figure it out better than those fancy Canon forums and it paid off.
I just needed to pay attention that a new folder appeared.

Good call Baddog and thanks for the help everyone. It would have really sucked to lose those pictures.
I'll pick out a few good ones and post them tomorrow :)
