i have experiece of doing tubes based on wp, it has some other specific of wp theme building and has some extrawork to be done, so this i call custom functions or custom functionsality. to say about thumbs to a post - starting from wp version 3.0 anyone is able to make easy thumbnail to a post in his wp theme from admin interface
