WordPress on 40K a day site?

is it doable? i've been advised not to use WP but i see a lot of fairly high traffic sites running on WP.

There are many sites pushing well over 40k using wp.

Agent 488 09-01-2010 10:58 AM

the idea that wp can't handle traffic is archaic.

I have some semi-high traffic WP sites. Though none do 40k/day I have some that do 20k/day and they don't have any load issues.

I guess it would depend on server specs, what kind of plugins (if any) you had running on the site. Mine use minimal plugs and perform fine.

If you are experiencing load time issues, there are cache plugins and such to cut down on the resources that it requires. :2 cents:

I got a WP site running 100k daily...without problems...alltho its not a streaming site..but still...

Aren't there plugins or something that are supposed to reduce some of the WP bloat? Not that it makes a difference for most WP sites, but for video sites doing lots of traffic it might. I just thought I recall there being some - and not talking about stuff like caching but I thought I remembered there being plugins to eliminate unnecessary/unused parts of WP to remove some of the bloat.

I'm running on 3 hours sleep so can't remember shit else.

Argos88 09-01-2010 01:07 PM

yes why not??

Why do you think it can not?

WordPress will handle a 40 K site way better than an decadent OLD MGP/TGP in HTML with trading traffic scripts...

.

greg80 09-01-2010 01:13 PM

Easily. Use wp cache or wp super cache. Tried and tested, not a problem at all.

Using a single server, dual xeon, 4gb ram. Can handle a lot more than 40k.

Fat Panda 09-01-2010 01:42 PM

wordpress is fucking awesome

JD 09-01-2010 01:43 PM

Totally doable. I've run 30K+ sites on OLD wordpress versions before. If you've got the right plugins and server setup you could do 500k/day and be fine

Calico Jack 09-01-2010 02:17 PM

I'm no expert, but as you say, there are some big sites running off Wordpress.

Did you notice an improvement in Speed Site performance in Google Webmaster Tools after using Wp Cache?

TeenCat 09-01-2010 02:32 PM

i pissed myself in this thread i say :)

StarkReality 09-01-2010 02:50 PM

No problem at all, just make sure to have some kind a cache plugin.

Also keep in mind that plugins are the #1 reason why wordpress gets hacked/compromised, it's almost always badly coded plugins since not all people writing them read the codex. A long term friend and programmer showed me how some plugins neglegt really basic security aspects and enable others to execute code, without any real "hacking".

Ive got several high traffic streaming video Wordpress tubes going.

ilbb 09-01-2010 02:57 PM

Use WPCACHE plugin to reduce your server load...I got some hight traffic sites on WP and caching is must have.

Ohh.. and MaxCDN... give it a try for $10 for 1000 gigs.

epitome 09-01-2010 03:09 PM

The biggest WP sites I see typically use both caching and CDN.
