What is the best (most common) image size, for stills offered within the photo galleries of a members area?

I'd say the most common is 1200x800 don't go smaller than that. Seems many are going to 1600 now.

Sounds good for horizontals, but would you go 1200 pixels tall for verticals too?

Our images are usually 1200*800 or 1300*900


As Naughty Rob said, definatly no smaller. Some programs are 1600 & 1800*1200!

I offer my thumb tables in 1024 on the long side, but include downloadable zips of the original size from the camera.

I find my members prefer 1200 x 800 for horizontals, as stated above, and 600 x 900 for verticals, so the whole image fits easily on most screens.

The latest version of our default out of the box CMS setup has 3 sizes: 1600, 1280 and 1024. Members can choose which size to view and also download a Zip of the photo set in all 3 sizes.

I've seen some of our Erotic/Glam site customers offer 2000+ or bigger and many will offer a super high-res option for stills, especially for the Zips as Elli already said. 1024 is still "safe" for viewing the galleries online but it's a good idea to offer at least 1 bigger size.

It also depends on the niche of your site. Members of a reality or video focused site are generally less demanding than members of a site where image size and high image quality are of more importance. :2 cents:
