Should I add a forum? Is it worth the effort?

We currently have our program up and running and added a directory service but my question is...
Is a forum worht the time and effort?
I know if it was a GFY trafficed place sure but as a new forum im concerned i will be putting in countless hours with little return where i could better serve that time else where?
It would be a vbulletin forum.

Also how to defeat the spam world any plugins or sugestions?

Once it's going moderation can eats hours although volunteer mods are usually easy to come by.

main problem is it's hard work to get a forum started, so unless you want to be pretending to be 40 very active users at once for a month or two to kick start it nobody real is going to join.

Actually, at the end of July I wasted some time explaing to camgirls unlimited how to kick start a forum and that he was wasting his time thinking it would go by itself but he didn't pay any attention and his forum is still just a waste of space after a month and a half

Mouse hit it right on the head. forums take a bit more dedication than any other kind of interaction on the net.

indeed. It took me more than 8 months of hard working to a message board with daily posts, paid articles and paid posters and it wasn`t what i expected. There are more things to to for the forum to be stable.
