I think this a case that is more explained by emotion, anger, passion and spontaneous feelings. Logic will not explain it. I agree that a person does not need guns to kill people. I don't kill people.

Did the gun get up, point itself, and pull it's own trigger?

Or...Did somebody else do all that with the gun?

Using the gun saved the doctors life because one shot was thought to have done
the job. If the suspect had used a knife then he would have stabbed the doctor
20 times to make sure he was dead.
