As a product of the NJ Public School system, he's throwing that money away.

Some PR stunt before The Social Network comes out and give him bad press?

Yngwie 09-23-2010 03:11 PM

He should donate $100 million to me. haha

Good for him. Maybe he should hire Michelle Rhee to fly in and kick some ass and kick out dysfunctional teachers and fuck with the teacher's union. Gov. Christie on one end and Rhee on the other, should have a happy ending for parents sick of dysfunctional schools.

Money is not the solution. Standards are. The money helps but with no standards or sticking to the status quo--it will be like pissing into a blazing inferno: meaningless and gets your dick burned. Put it this way, Dunbar high school in Washington DC cranked out the best of the black elite for DECADES and it was a poor underfunded school. Now, DC pours money into its schools, shitty results. Why? Teachers unions and resistance to merit-based pay and resistance to certain unified standards. If Dunbar DID it in the past (sadly, Dunbar got fucked after the 60s) with little to no money, contemporary schools can do it, too. Jaime Escalante type dedication and STANDARDS are the key.

Quite honestly this country needs it! Seriously, it's not like we seem to be getting any smarter...

Nice. That's a big chunk of donation.

I agree we need to improve standards..but trust me, the majority of the public school districts in the US are severely underfunded and I don't think that there's any chance that this donation could hurt any of these school districts. Schools are organizations just like small business. As a business owner you know the importance of just being able to keep your head above water before you can invest in growth. It's irritating that there's so much public criticism already re this announcement, especially when we could use more private donations and funding for pretty much all non-profits across the board.

That guy is one rich fuck, that's for sure.

Amputate Your Head 09-23-2010 04:47 PM

donations like that do not come without strings attached.

Agreed. What a massive waste of money.

Although school is important, there should be a lot of focus on jobs, also.

Bingo! Public sector unions are the cause of many of society's ills from corruption, to high taxes, to underfunded pension liabilities, to lousy schools. It is nearly impossible to fire poorly performing union employees.

DaddyHalbucks 09-23-2010 08:53 PM

NJ is a lost cause. You have to get rid of blue state politics to get at the root problem.

Zuckerberg is making a nice gesture, but it will be ineffective.
