The liberals are not the only people afraid of the Tea Party or Sarah Palin. The Republicans are worried that the tea party will win enough seats to make their lives hell. If these Tea Party people stick to their word they won't vote for anything that will raise he deficit which will be pretty much anything that is put on the floor. Without their support the Republicans will get nothing passed, never mind having to fight the Democrats.

As for Sarah Palin, you can tell the Republicans fear her because they are changing the delegate rules for the primaries. The Republican primaries have always been winner take all. You win the state, you get all the delegates. They are changing that for at least the first handful of states so now you get a number of delegates in proportion to the number of votes you get. This is how the Democrats do it.

They are doing this because they are afraid that Palin will run and since a large number of the early primaries are in bible belt states she could win some states early on. These victories could force out more moderate candidates that might be able to win the more moderate states and win the general election. Think of Huckabee in the last election. He stuck around early and traded wins with McCain. Eventually they left the bible belt and McCain pulled away in the more progressive states. What they don't want is Palin to come out of the gate fast, win a bunch of states and kill off Romney or some other more moderate candidate then have her get thrashed in the general election. Right now she polls well, but right now she isn't running for office so she can say what she wants when she wants and control her image. If she gets back on the campaign trail it will remind much of the country how batshit crazy she really is.

The tea party is all about cutting spending, shrinking government and reducing taxes. Many of the candidates they have supported are far right wing candidates who have said during their campaigns that they will not vote for any bill that will increase the deficit. If the republicans win back the house (which they likely will) anywhere between 10 and 15 of those republicans who are elected will be tea party supported candidates. IF those candidates then follow through with what the say they will do, they will not vote for any bill that increases the deficit. This will be a thorn in the side of the new republican leadership because much of what they are going to want to pass will increase the deficit.

This guy has been pretty dead on with his predictions of who will win elections over the past several years. If his numbers are correct the republicans will end up with about 14 seat majority in the house. If 15 of those republicans are tea party supported candidates who won't vote for anything that increases the deficit, that majority might as well not exist because they won't have the numbers to pass anything unless they make sure it deficit neutral or they cut something in order to add this.

This all hinges, of course, on the actions of those tea party candidates. For all we know they could get into office and just ignore what they have said during their campaigns. So when you look at the numbers, it is all pretty simple.

Realistically though, it doesn't matter. Regardless of who wins control of the house and senate the majorities will most likely be so small that either side can cause the other trouble and both sides will be fighting to stop the other's agenda. After two straight years of nothing but "no" from the republicans you would assume the democrats (if now in the minority) would return the favor. Even if the republicans win both the house and senate the infighting will be so heavy that unless Obama really moves to the middle and works with the republicans they will do everything they can to lame duck him and weaken his chances of being reelected so there is a good chance that regardless of the outcome in november were are going to see nothing but gridlock in washington for the next two years.

I agree, the Tea Party is changing the way things are done, things need change, can't say which is the better way to change, but things as usual doesn't work anymore. I was pretty happy during the Clinton years after 94 when the GOP took the house and senate, we had it pretty good in this country. Then we got away from fiscal conservative values and everything went to shit, the Tea Party is backing people that are fiscally conservative. That pisses off the GOP, and I love that, they fucked things up to begin with, then the voters voted in the democrats and they fucked it up even worse.

It's pretty simple, the democrats have had the control of the house and the senate for 4 years and 15 months after they took over, things went to shit, and it's not getting better, so we need the change they promised in the first place. This election is not about social issues, it's about fiscal issues, and the democrats will have a hard time proving they're fiscal with the track record of the last 4 years.

It isn't my opinion. It is the tea party's opinion. Here is something from a story in the Washington Post about this very subject. When they talked to a spokesperson for Rand Paul (one of the most well known tea party supported candidates) and asked about deficit spending this is the answer they got: "Runaway deficit spending as we now see in Washington, D.C., compels us to take action as the increasing national debt is a grave threat to our national sovereignty." Then he said, "Paul would vote against and filibuster any unbalanced budget proposal in the Senate."

So basically Paul is saying that if the republicans put forth a budget proposal that isn't balanced not only will he not vote for it, he would filibuster against it.

It isn't my opinion. This is what these guys are saying. I'm not saying it is a bad idea, if they actually stick with this it could really be good for the country. If anything it might be my opinion that it would be a thorn in the side of the GOP. Maybe it would cause them to change the way they do things for the better and they would actually like it. I'm sure that is likely to happen because our political leaders are known for being good sports about not getting their way and having to give in to those of opposing view.

Rand Paul has said that he would even filibuster his own party if they tried to pass an unbalanced budge proposal. Again, talk is cheap, I need to see some actions before I decide that these guys are any different than standard old republicans who promise the moon and deliver nothing but cheese.

Paul, after all, did once say he would never accept any campaign contributions from any senator who voted for the bail out. After wining the republican primary he flew to DC for a $1000 per plate dinner to raise money that included none other than Mitch McConnell who did vote for the bailout. So it took him less than 48 hours after winning the primary to break a promise. Not a very good start.
