Have you rooted your android device?

I rooted my android G1 and installed some new roms today. Went from Android 1.6 to Android 2.2 :thumbsup

Pretty easy process, took me about an hour and a half to get everything backed up and installed and configured.

So far I'm digging the new features :thumbsup

I'm using cyanogenmod 6.0 right now. It's been about 24 hours and so far everything's working nicely.

I upgraded my Android OS from 1.6 to 2.2, which isn't supported officially.

I had a G1 and found that on the G1 the only choice you had was to root it. There are plenty of good roms for the G1 that make it feel like it isn't the piece of shit that it really is. Then again, it is lightyears ahead of an iPhone 1 and 2...

Now I have a Cliq and it is supposed to get 2.1 here soon. Pointless since apps to sd is on 2.2 and so they should have just skipped 2.1 like they did with 1.6... Yes, I am on 1.5!

I rooted my Cliq but quickly found that the HTC community is much larger and smarter than the Motorola community is. The rooted roms for the Cliq all suck and are FILLED with bugs and I am not sure if they got the camera working yet.

So I am finding that if you buy an Android phone you should stick with HTC because my old G1 on a rooted 1.6 was miles ahead of my faster, more memory Cliq on a rooted 2.1 rom.

agreed.

Seems like the android os on the G1 stops officially at 1.6. 2.2 is so much better, and it wasn't really difficult to flash.

Funny thing with upgrading the G1 is you really ARE upgrading the G1!

In order to fit the 2.2 or 2.1 ROMS on your G1 they had to remove all of the bloat and then include preprocessed programs that can be run quicker. So they removed tons of bullshit that either took up space or drained your battery and then made it run more with less in half the time.

Now I wish I had my G1 back!

My wife's phone already has 2.2. Any other reasons to root it?

on the G1 you need to repartition the flash size, there's not enough room for 2.2 on a stock G1. The ROM I'm running now is the same one they use on the other phones. There are custom G1 roms tho, but I haven't tried any others yet.

honestly I'm not sure. Ability to install custom roms is one. Backup/restore rom images. Take off the carrier custom OS and use the generic OS.

Not really. She can already install apps to her SD card and save on phone memory, plus she can do data backups and restore in case she ever needs to do a factory reset. Those are really the only two things somebody would need to do with root.

Now, if she were a geek she might want to root for other reasons...

I figured as much, wasn't really sure. For someone like me with a G1 that won't officially be upgraded beyond 1.6 it was great to upgrade it. Almost like getting a completely new phone :thumbsup
