Metatags are overrated

This is old news, so I don't understand why people are so crazy about adding metatags to their sites...

Question: Does Google ever use the "keywords" meta tag in its web search ranking?
Answer: In a word, no.

You would be crazy not to add a description meta tag to your sites.

Davy 10-04-2010 01:45 AM

If you don't add a description tag, what will happen?
That's right - the search engine will use the site's text as description.
If your site does not contain any clutter, you therefore don't need a description tag.

Also, consider this:
if you add a description, and if Google accepts it, it will always show underneath the link in the SERPs.
If you don't add a description, Google will choose the part of the page with the relevant keywords and show it to the user in the SERPs. :2 cents:

every text on your site is only good for seo, and if you can hide some text to keywords or description, it is just better so your visible content is not looking like three words combined again and again ... :2 cents:

Hide text in SEO? You are in denial. Google does not - I repeat NOT - use the keyword tag.

Still, the description meta tag is not overrated and it's wise to use it. A good description can be the difference between a surfer clicking your site or not. But your thread title was implying that all meta tags are overrated. The title of the thread should've been 'The keywords meta tag is overrated'.

hm so i am doing it all the time wrong ... :)

Meta descriptions can be useful, if you add a link on facebook it will grab the description and display it in your news feed.

HomerSimpson 10-04-2010 04:18 AM

adding meta tags it's total waste of time...
better spend it on sites' content...

You are right. The 30 seconds it takes to write a description tag is a total waste of time.

Paul&John 10-04-2010 05:44 AM

Yes, but maybe bing/yahoo does use it, so it doesn't hurts to add them :)
