I'd like to see some great sites using Thesis that are not customized beyond what Thesis offers out of the box. Once you start customizing beyond that, many other themes would work just as well.

There are a number of free frameworks, that would work just as well. After playing with a bunch of them, Thesis is just my preference.

The one I linked is a framework, awesome out of the box.

i see no demos of what people have done with that theme.

I haven't even done much with mine yet, it's just the out of the box look and the myriad of options that you can change right from the admin. Usually I have to fix all of the shitty fonts and h1/h2 attributes etc but these all look good from the word go. Just took a lot of the b/s work out of it for me.

thesis is a great SEO based theme. spendy though. the one listed by the OP is a good alternative though.

I don't see why you would need "thesis".
Every wordpress site needs heavy modification and code work.
All the sites that I have done had to be modified so heavily, that running a "framework" like thesis would have more been an handicap than a real help.

Many options is not always a good thing. :2 cents:

There are up to 4 sidebars, a header and a footer. Not all show in the demo.

Thesis has all sorts of hotspots that you can place stuff in using using hooks. It's pretty easy once you "get" the concept.
