amazing pictures of lightning striking the statue of liberty [pics]
Can you imagine waiting more than 40 years to get a photo just right? That's precisely what New York photographer Jay Fine did to capture the images below.
And Fine's teenage dream came true on the evening of Sept. 22, when he headed down to lower Manhattan's Battery Park, which has a nice view of the Statue of Liberty. With his Nikon D300 and 60mm f2.8 lens in hand, the 58-year-old snapped more than 80 photos over two hours. He struck gold with the photo below around 8:45 p.m. "I had been watching weather reports so I knew a storm was coming and it just seemed like a great opportunity," he told the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "It was pure luck really, a once in a lifetime opportunity." http://www.polls.newsvine.com/_vine/...ds/5279607.jpg http://www.polls.newsvine.com/_vine/...ds/5279608.jpg |

not sure if the lightning is actually hitting the statue, or in behind it on land? He just happened to be inline with the statue, Take a closer look, to me it seems like its hitting land.:2 cents:

Lightning in general is fucking amazing. One of the coolest natural phenomena.
|
I like it. :)
|
Lines up fairly well but it's not coming down on the statue.
|
Looks amazing indeed :thumbsup
|
yeah, a 300 foot tall hunk of copper sitting in the middle of water & nothing, that gets struck by lightning ~600x a year on average and that bolt is hitting something 2 miles away but lines up perfectly.
i got it now. |
I could photochop that in about 2 minutes.
|
here's the photog's flicker stream, he also discusses the shot and has some other amazing shots

there goes America!

ive always wondered why we dont harness electricity from lightning.
storage of the power? harnessing the power? i wonder what the major obstacles are, im guessing handling that much flow at once...surely their must be ways to grab it, molten salt or something wacky like that off to google...if i see anything cool ill post it |
Wow that's awesome!

pretty amazing pics.

i like how the lightning is lighting up the side of the statue.
|
she could have just waited 25, then used photoshop 15 years ago to get the same pic :)
|
Great pic, but in both pics it actually appears to me that the lightening hits the mainland behind the island and the statue is merely in line with the strike and it doesn't hit the statue itself.
|
Wow thats great even if it doesn't hit the statue
|
It is lucky to be able to capture the strike of lightning on film, because the lightning lasts less than a second. Lightning storms can cause strange unexplained things. A group of people can come together to save themselves if they are under threat of death by the same local lightning storm.
