How to create a mobile site of an existing site?

Hi I have a nnumber of sites I want to optimise towards mobile. I was thinking of creating mobile.site.com and simply having a small page template and duplicating all content to fit on there.

However would the search engines penalize me for content duplication? Even if it was laid out differently?

Should I create from scrath the mobile section with it's own unique content.

What do you suggest?

frank for me there is two parts too your post the first is:

"having a small page template and duplicating all content to fit on there.... Should I create from scrath the mobile section with it's own unique content"

and

"However would the search engines penalize me for content duplication? Even if it was laid out differently?"

The content your working with is very important for the first question/s. I havent herd of the second question being an issue before. All your doing is offering your site on a different device serach engines will not penalize you for this. Everyone is doing this main stream included. Also your mobile site will be http://pda.myurlhere.com or http://m.myurlher.com so is not like having multiple movies on www.myurlhere.com.

Thanks nice answer.
you can still get in trouble for having same content on same domain though.

Block SE's in robots.txt from accessing mobile.*

They won't spider or index it.

:2 cents:

We build mobile tube sites for publishers, here are a few we have done

m.al4a.com
m.worldsex.com
pkmobi.com

We host the videos, update the site, manage the scripts and sell the banner ads on a PPC. We are about to introduce our premium mobile member upsell next week, which will add recurring monthly revenue to the PPC revenue.

If you're looking to test it out you can sign up here http://www.gtsmobi.com/signup/

Thanks
