The one that holds up the best of all those is The 5th Element.
I loved Total Recall as a kid. I tried watching it recently and fell asleep pretty quickly...which is my way of measuring how good something really is. |
Add Children Of Men to your list.
|
Blade Runner is the classic in that list.
|
Best sci-fi I've seen lately is District 9.
|
From this list, Total Recall by far.

Blade Runner is a "smart" movie for sure and has drop-dead stunning visuals which I still appreciate today. At the same time it's a pretty sloppy "movie" with obvious stunt doubles (the girl crashing through the glass), some sloppy FX (Wires visible when cars fly), strange ADR (Words clearly out of sync with moving lips when Deckard talks to the guy with the Fez), questionable decisions (voice-overs in 1 version, no voice over in other versions), and the Cheapest, laziest edit of all time which was the cut-scene from another Ridely Scott's other movie, Legend, during Deckard's non-existant dream sequence about Unicorns). Yes it explained the Unicorn at the end, but talk about sloppy moving making. Total Recall is great. It had just enough budget to make it look cool, and Paul Verhoven's (Robocop, Starship Troopers) direction is fun (and funny) as hell. Watch the DVD or blu ray version - skip the TBS Sunday Afternoon version. Trust me. The funniest of the bunch is Demolition Man. All the film makers clearly had fun making this moivie, and Sandra Bullock is so damn cute in it. |
total recall is my choice

Blade Runner or the 5th element but we could put Brazil in that list http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi4256891161/

SKYLINE looks like it will be good

Blade Runner in my opinion is in a class of its own in that group.
Just my opinion, the others are all fun, but Blade Runner is a real cinematic experience. Quote:

I would like to throw Zardoz into the mix. It's always been one of my favorites.

Easily Blade Runner, come on guys!
Highly recommend the final cut if you haven't seen it yet. If I had to add more great sci-fi then Alien, Aliens and Predator. |

Alright all of those original films you listed are good except Judge Dredd, but none of them compare to Blade Runner. As someone already mentioned, Blade Runner is in a class by itself and probably on alot of top ten greatest films ever made lists. more dystopia flicks- Robo Cop Road Warrior Predator 2 THX 1138 Soylent Green |
funny how blade runner was seen as a failure when it first came out.

who loves you and who do you love?

I was going to mention Legend but I was afraid it might be too fantasy. Seriously, Legend is also one of my favorite movies, right up with Blade Runner. But take this piece of advice- don't waste your time with the directors cut. Director's cut of Blade Runner- Good, director's cut of Legend- awful. It has the Tangerine Dream score totally stripped out and a thick, classical, fairy tale score in its place. I guess the classical soundtrack was Scott's original intention, but it changes the entire mood of the picture. Sometimes editors are right, and this is a perfect example. |
Out of your list, Blade Runner hands down for me.
