Will Apple buy Sony?

Interesting rumours abound the valley (silicon valley, not OUR valley) about the possibility of Apple buying Sony. Apple have enough cash reserves to be able to buy them for cash, and their shareholders are bleating about them doing SOMETHING with the huge stockpile they have.

It would be interesting.

Jobs has loved Sony from day one. When the walkman came out he took it to bits to try and work out how they could engineer such smooth lines. Certainly they were the best consumer electronics brand, but now they have all this content.

Movies, music, bands, games, ALL owned by Sony.

If Apple suddenly owned all that content and IP, what could they do with it? How could they disrupt the landscape even more than they already have with ipod/itunes combo.

In terms of marketing, I cannot see Apple claiming ownership of Sony design of things like the incredo-ug Google TV remote control.

But seeing integration of Sony TVs and apple tv would be very interesting.

What do you think?

steve jobs is my dad

Zorgman 10-29-2010 05:19 AM

Apple will only ever build on it's own company. I don't see it buying any others.

pornguy 10-29-2010 05:51 AM

Hrm if they bought sony it would be an odd and interesting move for them.

They buy companies all the time.

QuickMark 10-29-2010 06:09 AM

Would be interesting to see this go forward, what kind of spin Apple would put on Sony.

GetSCORECash 10-29-2010 06:14 AM

It won't happen. I say it's all spin to sell some stocks.

Ross 10-29-2010 06:15 AM

As long as they don't fuck up Playstation, they can buy it all they want. I'm loving my Sony Bravia LED 40 inch tv! So much so I'm thinking of buying the 55 inch version for my gaming area.

They buy other companies pretty consistently actually.

Cyber Fucker 10-29-2010 06:53 AM

Nooo... Sony will buy Apple.

Wait.... apple is gay, Sony doesn't give a shit about gay Apple.

TheSwed 10-29-2010 06:58 AM

I think that is only a Apple's dream because they know that Sony will be a real danger competitor
:2 cents:

Agreed. I have a Sony Bravia Rear Projection and its the best TV I've ever owned.

Si 10-29-2010 07:01 AM

Apple are just trying to get the share prices above $1000 :1orglaugh

scuba steve 10-29-2010 07:09 AM

Forest 10-29-2010 07:11 AM

aapl will not buy sony imho

they will buy someone as they have a ton of cash on hand but I think they would more likely buy someone like netflix

netflix is the other sensible bet. however, they don't get any content with that deal. I think the CONTENT sony owns through it's record labels and movie studios is what makes it interesting.

If you own the content and the distribution and the retail and the devices you consumer the content on, you are suddenly VERY powerful

very powerful indeed...

bronco67 10-29-2010 07:38 AM

First order of business for Steve Jobs after the acquisition...

make the Playstation as gay as possible. They'll call it the Apple Gaystation.

I'm on the verge of buying a 55 inch Bravia LCD. So it's good huh?

ofcourse they get content but just in a diff format than with sony they get access to millions of customers immediately to allow them to move many of them to aapl products.

itunes has something like 10k titles in its library. netflix has 100k.

netflix is the smart move for aapl.

They would more likely rename it the "i-Play".

sextoyking 10-29-2010 07:43 AM

Steve Jobs has a bit of an ego and the content sony owns is good....

What I first thought of was that he could go straight after Xbox's market share....

No cursing, gore, sex, or nudity in Playstation games anymore. What fun.

Um, content is movies and films and books. Content is not a list of customers. That is a database.

Both are interesting thoughts, but don't suggest if they buy netflix they would be buying content. Because clearly, they wouldn't.

Apple control the appstore, yes, but they don't censor movies or tv shows on iTunes.

seeandsee 10-29-2010 08:29 AM

they should do it, and sell me all isony shit :D

Noe 10-29-2010 08:37 AM

It would be a smart move by apple, but think the cultures are too much too different.

Sony shareholders may be temporarily upset but that's primarily due to the weakening US dollar against a growing yen, so export naturally is down. Sony is patient enough and smart enough to think of alternative strategies to boost profits for future quarters I believe, I don't think they're ready to roll over just yet.

The iphone/ipad are his trojan horse there... he's got all them game developers learning to Dev for OSX without most of them even realizing it.

An apple game box is coming, just a matter of when.
I'm looking forward to it too, cause my Xbox barely fucking works half the time, always freezing and shit.

SomeCreep 10-29-2010 09:47 AM

Sony, no. Netflix, yes.

Rangermoore 10-29-2010 09:49 AM

I love the way you explain how you formed that opinion. Very persuasive.

Never happen. I mean why would Apple bother.

So they could own one of the largest owners of music and movies and videogames. As they already own one of the largest outlets for those things, if they also owned the content, well, it would be good for them, wouldn't it?

Just a guess.
