If you want a big traffic site worth money with tons of eyeballs on it you need to make something incredibly, incredibly stupid, narcissistic and asinine. Unfortunately as my knowledge and experience continues to peak I am progressively less and less able to put myself in the shoes of the average moron and understand what would appeal to them.

Makes me wanna pack it in sometimes. Really, its like living on another planet.

Look at text messaging going back... who the fuck would have thought tweens and teenage girls would come to spend BILLIONS writing pointless and ridiculously stupid messages to each other all day, non-stop on a NUMERIC FUCKING KEYPAD.

5min.com looks like an educational site with a lot of "how to..." articles.

woj 10-30-2010 09:59 AM

it doesn't even get THAT much traffic, wtf?

Linguist 10-30-2010 10:01 AM

Its ASP, not PHP.

And yes, I think everyone here knows that affiliate marketing won't make you $50mill unless you own a large aff program.

Odin 10-30-2010 10:08 AM

AOL is certainly pushing hard lately. Interesting to see them at least doing something. Good for startups too.

seeandsee 10-30-2010 10:27 AM

site looks interesting but 65mils

I have to respectfully disagree with you.

I know of several affiliates who have made that type of money over the last 10-15 years.

I feel the same way, looking even at facebook it makes me think REALLY?? That big?? It's bringing the internet and related products and services to stupid people that's making money. Or twitter, just little blurps of non sense and bullshit...For some people that's what they know as the internet.

Just an addition, the services have to be digestible to the masses...

not saying it's worth $65m but it appears to be more than a script

5min Media is the world's leading video syndication network with a library of more than 200,000 categorized, tagged and rated videos from more than 1,000 of the world's largest media companies and professional independent video producers. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in New York City with offices in Tel Aviv, 5min Media has been named the largest U.S. independent video property by comScore, with more than 20 million unique viewers and more than 130 million video streams (including ad and content videos) in the U.S. in August 2010. 5min Media's growing network of 800 partner sites allows content creators to reach this audience of targeted viewers across 21 different verticals, including six verticals – Home, Food, Beauty / Fashion, Health, Travel and Pets – that lead their categories, according to comScore Video Metrix, August 2010. VideoSeed, 5min Media's proprietary semantic technology, contextually matches the most relevant videos with a partner site's text content to enhance the consumer experience and increase monetization rates.

I'm not saying $65M was the right price but ehow type sites and microniche/longtail content = $ I've built a few of these niche resource sites (the example you mentioned just happens to be wider as opposed to the super narrow verticals I've done) for clients and one guy got 5 figure offer for something that didn't cost much to make.

CaptainHowdy 10-30-2010 05:38 PM

Bad rep for everyone...

HomerSimpson 10-31-2010 05:39 AM

design looks shitty, and thumbs are missing all over the site...
