But comment spammers can fuck shit up big time. See this example.

So, WP owners have turned to Akismet, WP's default comment spam filter. Sadly, the false positive rate for Akismet is VERY HIGH and you lose out on high quality/content-building/unique comments.

Interesting, I have seen a huge increase in spam to my high traffic blogs lately and this might be the solution. I will check it out, thanks for sharing.

I am also having a very pleasant experience using http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nospamnx/ recently. On my spammiest blog it took me from several hundred robot spams in my moderation queue daily down to 3-5. So far as I can tell, it never interferes with a real human.

I use http://akismet.com/ and it works fine

alot of trackback spam as well, but there is also a plugin to thwart that, i forget the name but search under trackback.
also for the hell of it sometimes when updating a blog i will check out the pendng comments, go in and edit them with my links, change a few words and add 10 or 20 modified comments in the space of five minutes. i love personally twisting their spam to suit my blog.

That and I shut the comments off. No need for comments on most of my blogs. I do the talking... :)

Hehehe makes sense for certain types of blogs. In many situations though, real comments add to the depth and value of the blog post and enrich the content/authority of the blog.

There was a plug in that would let your users authenticate using social media accounts. I can't seem to find it.

I take a lot of the spam comments, remove the links and edit the text as needed. It makes my blog look like it has a lot of activity. So they way I look at its free content generation I don?t have to pay for.
